Greetings and blessing,

I reply to your letter in which you tell me that you forget much more than before. In general, this has two causes:

A) When one studies without interest and without pleasure, one does not engage the profound aspect of one's will. Thereupon, one forgets, as the Alter Rebbe* indicates, in an allusive manner, in Iggeres HaKodesh*, Kuntres Acharon, "David Zemiros," and, at greater length, in the Reshimas Eichah* of the Tzemach Tzedek*.

B) Forgetfulness also occurs when one does not preserve the holiness of the covenant of circumcision.

If you redouble your ardor in these two domains (by repairing, to the best degree, one and the other), your memory will improve and you will meet with success in the study of the revealed part of the Torah and of Chassidus*. This corresponds to what the Parshah* of this week says: "Behold, I place before you today the blessing — that you will listen..." And, it is known that concerning the blessing, it says "that you will listen," in an affirmative manner, for there is no doubt about it. It is not the same for the end of the verse (which speaks of the curse) which says "if" (if you listen — a formula that is only conditional).

It is indispensable that this be so as quickly as possible (it is necessary to listen!).

במענה על מכתבו בו כותב אשר נתגבר אצלו ענין השכחה וכו' ועל פי רוב תלוי זה בשני ענינים. א) כשלומדים מבלי חשק וחפץ שאז הלימוד הוא לא מפנימיות הרצון ובמילא גורם זה לשכחה וכמרומז באגרת הקדש לרבנו הזקן בקו"א ד"ה דוד זמירות ובאריכות ברשימת איכה לאדמו"ר הצמח צדק. ב) מהעדר הזהירות בקדושת הברית, וכשיוסיף אומץ בשני אלו (ומתאים לפרשת השבוע הנני נותן לפניכם היום ברכה אשר תשמעו וגו' וידוע הדיוק אשר בהברכה נכתב בפשיטות אשר תשמעו ואין בזה ספק (דלא כסיום הפסוק - אם) וההקדם בזה מוכרח). שאז ישתפר גם כן הענין דהזכרון ויצליח בלימודו בתורת הנגלה ובתורת החסידות.
