Greetings and blessing,

I reply to your letter, in which you tell me that you find yourself in a low state, although you are a student of the Yeshivah* Lubavitch.

As you know, our Sages say that "one who tells you he did not make efforts and yet knew success — do not believe him." Now, this effort is not identical for everyone. It depends on the capacities at one's disposal, the needs of one's body and of one's own animal soul.

You must therefore study with genuine enthusiasm and ardor. Thus, you will know, in a fruitful manner, the revealed part of the Torah and Chassidus*. It is unnecessary to add that each person must obtain the blessing of Hashem. This is the reason we say in our prayer, at the first blessing in which it is permitted to ask Hashem for what one needs: "Grant us wisdom, understanding and knowledge." Consequently, it is indispensable to pray with fervor.

במענה על מכתבו בו כותב אשר מרגיש עצמו במצב נמוך אף כי נמצא בישיבת תומכי תמימים. הנה כבר ידוע מרז"ל לא יגעת ומצאת אל תאמין, והיגיעה אינה שוה בכל אחד ואחד כי היא לפי הכח שנתנו לו ולפי הצורך של גופו ונפשו הבהמית הוא דוקא, ובמילא הנה ילמוד במסירה ונתינה אמיתית ואז יצליח בלימודו בתורת הנגלה ובתורת החסידות, ולמותר להוסיף שכל אחד ואחד נצרך לסייעתא דשמיא שזהו שאנו אומרים בעבודת התפלה בברכה הראשונה שמבקשים הצרכים: חננו מאתך חכמה בינה ודעת, ולכן מוכרחת עב' התפלה.
