To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, devotes himself to communal needs, has manifold knowledge, the Rav Sh. Y. (Rav Shlomo Yosef Zevin, of Yerushalayim*, author of the Talmudic Encyclopedia; see, concerning him, letter no. 2798),

Greetings and blessing,

I reply to your letter written at the conclusion of this Shabbos* and to the one that preceded it. I appreciated the exchange you had with the Rav Kasher (author of the collection Torah Shelemah) and I share your opinion when you view negatively the fact of traveling here (presumably to lead a publicity campaign for the Talmudic Encyclopedia).

You doubtless know the vile publicity that is made in this country and which, to our great pain, has also penetrated into the tent of the Torah — not only among those who support it, but... (also among those who practice it). Happy is he who can preserve himself from all of this, even passively!

How much more so for one who can free the time he would devote to all of this and consecrate it to a communal cause, in particular in the tent of the Torah. Such is the good portion that falls to you and with which Hashem has granted you the merit.

Even when one promises that this publicity will not take on an excessive aspect, it is practically impossible to maintain such a commitment, for "one who arrives in a city adopts its practices." Because of this, angels ate (when they came to visit Avraham, thus adopting the behavior of men). How much more so for men.

There is in this a means of squandering one's ardor, one's time, one's health, one's nervous tension, as one can observe in those who come here on a mission, whatever it may be.

Other reasons still cause me to react in this way to this proposal. And, to say that the interest of the Talmudic Encyclopedia cannot be defended by all those who are here and by the various offices seems to me particularly doubtful.

N.B.: For a certain reason, the dispatch of this letter was delayed. Yesterday, the Rav Gold visited me and I appreciated the esteem he bears you. Obviously, he mentioned, in passing, your trip here as an action not linked to a party, but uniquely devoted to the honor of the Torah.

I replied by telling him what happened a year ago, or a little more. The Yeshivah* Lubavitch, here, wanted to invite you to come for a few months, but my answer was negative, for it would not have been good for your health.

He replied that a physician would be consulted, but I maintained my words and my opinion.

במענה על מכתבו ממוצש"ק והקודם לו. הנה נהניתי מתוכן דבורו עם הרב כשר שי', כי גם דעתי כן הוא, היינו ביחס שלילי להצעה לעשות נסיעה לכאן. ובודאי ידועה לו הפרסומת הזולה הנהוגה במדינה זו, אשר לצערנו הגדול הנה חדרה גם לאהלה של תורה וכו', ולא רק בתמכין דאורייתא, אלא גם כו', ואשרי האיש אשר ביכולתו להשתמט מזה אפילו אם יהי' שב ואל תעשה, ועאכו"כ לזה שיכול להחליף המרץ והזמן שיתן על הנ"ל לענינים של תועלת הרבים, ובפרט באהלה של תורה, וכחלקו היפה של כת"ר, אשר זיכוהו בזה מן השמים. אף גם אם מבטיחים שישמרו מצורה מופרזה של הפרסומת הנה ברובא דרובא אי אפשר לקיים הבטחה בזה, כי אתית לקרתא אזלת בנימוסא, ואם מלאכים ממש אכלו ממש מטעם זה - הרי עאכו"כ בני אדם וכו'. וזהו טעם נוסף על בזבוז המרץ הזמן והבריאות והעצבים - ניערווין - במדה גדולה, וכמו שרואים בחוש באלו המבקרים כאן בשליחות, איזה שתהי'. ועוד כמה טעמים לחוו"ד הנ"ל אודות ההצעה, והתועלת הגשמית בשביל האנציקלופדיא התלמודית וכיו"ב, שא"א שתבוא ע"י אלו שכבר נמצאים כאן, והמשרדים הרבים - לדעתי מסופקת ביותר וביותר...

בברכת הצלחה בעבודתו בקדש מתוך מנוחה והרחבת הדעת.

מסיבה נתעכב שילוח מכתב זה, ואמש ביקר אצלי הרב גאלד שי'. ונהניתי מאופן דיבורו ע"ד כת"ר שי'. כמובן דיבר ע"ד שאלת נסיעת כת"ר לכאן כבדרך אגב, ושאין זה ענין מפלגה כ"א בשביל כבוד התורה וכו', עניתי לו בסיפור מעשה שהי' לפני שנה ויותר שישיבת תו"ת דכאן רצתה להזמין את כת"ר לכאן לביקור איזה חדשים, ודעתי היתה בשלילה, כי אינו מתאים להבריאות. ענה שא"כ ישאלו חוו"ד רופא וחזרתי אני על דברי ודעתי.
