To the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, the Rav Yehudah (Rav Y. Shmotkin; see, concerning him, letter no. 2841),
Greetings and blessing,
You raise the issue of names and you ask me whether one should fear assigning the names Yehudah and Shmuel, according to what is said in the testament of Rabbi Yehudah HaChassid* (according to which these names are not favorable). Daily practice demonstrates that there is no cause for fear and you yourself are proof of this (since the recipient of this letter is named Yehudah).
Apart from this, various points of his testament concern only his descendants. Now, it is known that the Maharsha* was one of his descendants. Despite this, he was called Shmuel Eliezer and his father was called Yehudah.
A new edition of the Torah Or* is being prepared here for publication, with additions. I would like to know whether you still have copies of the one you had published in 5699 (1939), as mentioned in the HaTamim, volumes 7 and 8. If so, are the corrections those that appear in the Torah Or* of the Kehot* editions, or are there others? I thank you for informing me on this subject.

... מ"ש אודות השמות אם יש לחשוש בקריאת שם יהודא ושמואל ע"פ צוואת ר"י החסיד, הרי מעשים בכל יום שאין חוששים לזה כלל וכלל והוא עצמו יוכיח ומלבד שהנ"ל כמה עניני הצוואה לא צוה אלא לזרעו הרי ידוע שהמהרש"א הוא מזרעו ונקרא שמואל אליעזר ואביו יהודא.
