Greetings and blessing,

I reply to your letter of 27 Menachem Av, informing me that you will move into your new house in two weeks. You will doubtless bring there, beforehand, a Chumash*, a Tehillim*, a Siddur* and a Tanya* (see, on this subject, letter no. 2849). May Hashem grant that in changing your place, you change your mazal*, for good and for blessing, materially and spiritually.

You ask me about the secular studies of your son. It is clear that they must be set aside entirely, in his current situation. Hashem has granted him success and he is pursuing his studies, with success, at the Yeshivah* Lubavitch. He must therefore preserve this blessing of Hashem and this success, make use of it in the best possible manner, and not follow the enticements of his evil inclination, which wishes to lighten Jewish practice, to distance men in general and young people in particular from the path of Hashem.

The evil inclination knows that if it reveals its plans, it will not be followed. It therefore hides behind a career plan and our Sages say: "This is how the evil inclination proceeds: Today, it says: do this..." (and tomorrow, it asks one to go serve idols; its approach is therefore progressive and methodical).

How fortunate is your lot! Your son is within the four cubits of the Torah and the fear of Hashem, protecting him from the tempestuous winds that blow currently in the world in general and, in particular, in the land "toward which the eyes of Hashem are always turned, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year." You understand the precautions that are necessary on the part of those who live in the royal palace (i.e., the Holy Land).

I hope that these few lines will suffice not only to convince you, but also to enable you to exercise your influence on your surroundings in this direction. You have great merit, since you come to the aid of immigrants (in Eretz Yisrael*), in particular regarding their fear of Hashem. You will therefore obtain blessing and success in all your needs and in those of the members of your family.

במענה על מכתבו מכ"ז מנ"א שבערך עוד שבועים יכנסו לדירתם החדשה, ובודאי לכל לראש יכניסו לשם חומש תהלים סידור ותניא. ויה"ר מהשי"ת שיהי' משנה מקום משנה מזל לטובה ולברכה הן בגשמיות והן ברוחניות.

מה שכותב אודות בנו... שי' בקשר עם השאלה דלימוד לימודי חול, הנה פשוט שיש לשלול את זה במצבו עתה דכיון שהצליחו השי"ת ושוקד הוא בלימוד בישיבת תומכי תמימים... צריך להאחז בברכת השי"ת וההצלחה ולנצלם ככל היכולת ולא לשמוע להסתת היצר הרע המחפש היתרים וכוונתו לבלבל את האדם בכלל ואת הנוער בפרט מללכת בדרכי השם, ובידעו - היצה"ר - שאם יגלה כוונתו זו לא ישמעו לו במילא מתלבש באיצטלא של חשבונות של תכלית וכו' וכידוע במרז"ל כך הוא אומנתו של היצה"ר היום אומר לו כך וכו' ואשרי חלקו שבנו נמצא בד' אמות של תורה - ויראת שמים השומרים על הרוחות בלתי מצויות הנושב עתה בעולם בכלל ובארץ אשר עיני ה"א בה מראשית השנה ועד אחרית שנה בפרט ומובן גודל הזהירות המוכרחה לאלו הנמצאים בפלטרין של מלך. תקותי ששורתי אלו המעטות בכמות תספיקנה ולא רק בשבילו אלא שינצל גם השפעתו על הסביבה בכיוון זה וגדול זכות מה שמסייע להעולים בכלל ובענינים דיראת שמים בפרט להשפיע לו ברכה והצלחה בהמצטרך לו ולבני ביתו שיחיו.
