Greetings and blessing,
I reply to your letter of 12 Menachem Av, in which you tell me that certain parents approach you requesting that their daughters be taught mathematics and physics.
This teaching must in no way contravene the fear of Hashem, quite the contrary. It will enable them to be "perfumers and cooks," according to the expression of the Rambam*. If you do not teach them these disciplines, there is reason to fear that they will study them with other persons, in a different environment. In that case, your teaching will be unique. It is therefore preferable that they remain in a favorable environment and receive this teaching in the appropriate manner. Indeed, you will use your influence to strengthen their fear of Hashem.
May Hashem grant you success, as well as your wife, in good health, and that you be able to announce good news, material and spiritual.

במענה על מכתבו מי"ב מנ"א, בו כותב שישנם הורים שפונים אליו בבקשה ללמד את בנותיהן מתמתיקה, פיסיקה וכו'.
הנה בודאי אופן לימודו הוא שאינו נוגע ח"ו בעניני די"ש, ואדרבה, וכידוע מאמר הרמב"ם שיכולים הם לשמש לרקחות ולטבחות, וכיון שאם הוא לא ילמד אותן יש מקום לחשש שילמדו אצל אחר ובסביבה אחרת, ולימודו יהי' באופן פרטי, הרי כדאי שישארו בסביבה המתאימה ויקבלו לימודים אלה באופן המתאים, כי בטח ישתדל לנצל את השפעתו על הנ"ל לחזקן ביראת שמים. והשי"ת יצליחו ואת זוגתו שיחיו בבריאות הנכונה ולבשר טובות בגשמיות וברוחניות.
