To my close relative, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, issued from an illustrious family, the Rav Shmuel Abba (Rav Sh. A. Shapiro; see, concerning him, letter no. 2312),

Greetings and blessing,

After an interruption, I received with pleasure your letter of Monday of Parshas Vaeschanan, which reached me with some delay. First of all, you begin by saying that you keep engraved in your mind the words you heard several decades ago from my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit will protect us. He told you that your ancestors are the descendants of the Tzaddik*, Rabbi Pinchas of Koretz, one of the founders of Chassidus*, and of the brothers of Slavita, printers and disseminators of the books of Chassidus*, who endured trials on this account.

The Mishnah* rules, in tractate Eduyos, chapter 2, Mishnah 9, that the father and the mother confer merit upon their children. And, the commentators explain that the nature of the son is close to that of the father. The parents also bring wisdom — that is, correct reasoning — according to the interpretation of Rabbi Ovadyah of Bartenura. This Mishnah establishes what is at once a tangible fact and a halachic disposition, in particular for the firstborn son (whose share of the inheritance is double).

You do not mention your state of health. This is doubtless a sign that all is well. You mention, in addition, the Sefer Torah* (see, on this subject, the end of letter no. 2478). Some time ago, I wrote on this subject to the Rav P. Althuis (Rav Pinchas Todros Althuis, of the Holy Land; see, concerning him, letters no. 2312 and 2477), who has doubtless contacted you.

לאחרי ההפסק נעם לי לקבל מכתבו מב' ואתחנן שהגיעני באיחור זמן קצת, והעיקר התחלתו אשר נחקק בזכרונו מה ששמע זה עשיריות בשנים מכ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע אשר אבותיו הם מגזע הרה"צ הר"ר פנחס מקאריץ ממייסדי החסידות והאחים סלאוויטא מדפיסי ומפיצי ספרי החסידות וסבלו בעד החסידות כו' שמזה מוכרח ע"פ פסק המשנה (עדיות ב, ט) אשר האב/ם זוכה לבן (ובפירושי המשנה שם לפי שקרוב טבע הבן להיות דומה לטבע האב) וכו' ובחכמה (היא הסברא הישנה - הרע"ב מברטנורה), ומאמר משנה זהו הרי זה הודעה הנמצא במציאות וגם פס"ד ובפרט בהנוגע לבן בכור.

כיון שאינו מזכיר דבר ע"ד בריאותו הרי בודאי זהו סימן שהכל בסדר ובשלום, ומה שמזכיר ע"ד הס"ת, הרי מכבר שכתבתי להר"פ שי' אלטהויז בזה ובודאי באו בדברים.

בברכה לבריאות הנכונה בגשמיות ולבריאות הנכונה ברוחניות אשר אצל העם הישראלי הנושא דגל האחדות בהיצירה כולה יחד יהלכו.
