Greetings and blessing,

I reply to your letter in which you tell me that you do not feel enthusiasm in the study of Chassidus*. You ask me what you should do.

As you know, the Torah was received when one said: "We will do and (then) we will understand," and this understanding is necessarily enthusiastic. Indeed, if one reduces it to hearing (if one translates this expression as "we will do and then we will hear") what is said, how can one act before having gained knowledge of what one must do?

In this case, a trial is being imposed upon you in this matter, and may Hashem protect you from succumbing to it, from reducing your study on this account. The verse, indeed, specifies what the purpose of a trial is: "To know whether you love Hashem, your Elokim*."

You will therefore observe the ritual immersion, according to the enactment of Ezra (by going to the mikveh* after each conjugal relation), and you will read each day, after the prayer, Tehillim* according to their monthly division, as my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit will protect us, instituted. Before the prayer, you will give several coins to tzedakah*. Likewise, you will distribute tzedakah* to those around you, thereby bringing hearts closer to our Father Who is in Heaven.

It is certain that you will receive help to remove the obstacles and the veils. Thus, not only will you know that the Torah in general and Chassidus* in particular contain a beneficial and hidden light, but even more, you will feel that this is so.

במענה על מכתבו בו כותב שאינו מרגיש חיות בלימוד החסידות ושואל עצה בזה.

והנה בטח ידוע לו מרז"ל אשר קבלת התורה היתה דוקא ע"י הקדמת נעשה לנשמע - שפירושו הבנה וחיות (כי אם כפשוטו הרי אי אפשר לעשות קודם השמיעה לדעת מה לעשות), ובמילא אין להתפעל אם מנסים גם אותו בזה וח"ו לא להתרפות עי"ז מהלימוד כי כל ענין נסיון הוא כמו שנאמר שהוא לדעת הישכם אוהבים את ה' אלקיכם.

יהי' נזהר בטבילת עזרא ויאמר בכל יום אחר התפלה השיעור תהלים - כפי שנחלק התהלים לימי החדש - כתקנת כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע, וקודם התפלה יפריש פרוטה לצדקה ויעשה צדקה בסביבתו על ידי שישפיע עליהם בקירוב לבם לאבינו שבשמים בודאי יסייעוהו עי"ז להסיר ממנו העלמות והסתרים עד שירגיש ולא רק שידע האור כי טוב הגנוז בתורה בכלל ובתורת החסידות בפרט.
