Greetings and blessing,

I reply to your letter of 5 Elul*, in which you ask me whether you should maintain your practice, since it happens that you pray at length, meditating according to Chassidus*. Now, it appears that this does not refine your personality. You therefore ask me whether you should continue to do so.

Your question is surprising. You pray in this manner and, despite this, you have not yet succeeded in changing your personality. You can therefore imagine what will happen when you abandon this practice, as daily experience allows one to verify. Immediate logic establishes that by praying at length and meditating upon the Torah of life, one does indeed improve one's personality, so that ultimately, not only does one repel the evil, but even more, one transforms it into good.

You should have your tefillin* checked and give, before the prayer, each weekday, several coins to tzedakah*. After the prayer, you will read Tehillim* according to their monthly division. All of this will enable you to see the effect of your prayer upon your personality.

You also inform me of the date that has been set for your wedding. May Hashem cause it to be with Mazal Tov*, Mazal Tov*, at a good and fruitful moment. You will build a Jewish home, an everlasting edifice based on the Torah and the mitzvos*, as they are illuminated by the luminary of the Torah, the teachings of Chassidus*.

במענה על מכתבו מה' אלול בו שואל אם להמשיך בדרכו שמתפלל לפעמים באריכות ובהתבוננות בענין מתורת החסידות אבל לפי הנראה לו לא פועל על המדות ובמילא שאלתו, אם להמשיך בזה.

והשאלה תמוה, כי מה אם כשנוהג ע"ד הנ"ל ובכ"ז עדיין לא פעל על המדות, הרי אפשר לשער מה שיהי' כשיעזוב דרכו זה, כי הרי מעשים בכל יום. ומובן גם בשכל הפשוט אשר אריכות התפלה והתבוננות בענין מתורת חיים מסייעים להטבת המדות וסו"ס גם לאתהפכא ולא רק לאתכפיא.

וצריך הי' לבדוק את התפילין שלו וכן לתת בכל יום חול קודם התפלה איזה פרוטות לצדקה ולאחר התפלה השיעור תהלים - כפי שנחלק לימי החדש - אשר בטח אז יראה ג"כ בעיני בשר פעולת עבודתו זו הנ"ל על המדות.

ולהודעתו מקביעות יום חתונתו עם ב"ג תחי'... הנה יה"ר מהשי"ת שיחי' למזל טוב מזל טוב ובשעה טובה ומוצלחת ויבנו בית בישראל בנין עדי עד על יסודי התורה והמצוה כפי שהם מוארים במאור שבתורה זוהי תורת החסידות.
