Greetings and blessing,

I duly received your letter of 14 Elul*, as well as the previous one. As you request, I will mention your name near the resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit will protect us, that you be inscribed and sealed for a good year, materially and spiritually.

You describe your current situation and what it has been until now. Now, you know the saying of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, according to which "one action is preferable to a thousand complaints" (see letter no. 2945), and the teaching of the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya* and Decisor of the hidden part of the Torah, author of the Shulchan Aruch* and Decisor of the revealed part of the Torah, according to which, in our era, there is no reason to multiply fasts. He even forbids fasting, in the third chapter of Iggeres HaTeshuvah*.

Now, in addition to the general weakness of the generation, you are undergoing medical treatment. Moreover, even if these fasts were justified, why not have recourse, in the first instance, to the other means, rather than to what weakens the body and therefore also the faculty of comprehension, during study and meditation, during prayer?

In my opinion, you must therefore multiply the words of the Torah and of prayer. You will also find a way to act upon the education of Jewish children in sacred values, by intervening personally (by teaching) or by leading others to do so. You will also have a specific study, which will be fixed in time and in your soul, of the inner dimension of the Torah, which in our days has been revealed by Chassidus*. The Zohar* calls it (the hidden part of the Torah) the "Tree of Life," for evil has no hold upon it. This is, in particular, one of the means of repairing the sin that one knows (the emission of seed in vain), as various books establish.

And, our Sages say that "to whoever adds (efforts), there is added (blessings)," in particular success in this accomplishment.

I send you my blessing that your state of health improve, materially and spiritually, for these two dimensions go together among Jews, "a unique people on the earth," which reveals the Unity (of Hashem) in everything that concerns it.

מאשר הנני קבלת מכתבו מי"ד אלול והקודם לו, וכבקשתו אזכירו על הציון של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע לכוח"ט לשנה טובה בגשמיות וברוחניות גם יחד.

ומה שכותב אודות מצבו עתה ועד עתה, הנה ידוע פתגם כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר, טובה פעולה אחת מאלף אנחות, והוראת רבנו הזקן בעל התניא - פוסק בנסתר דתורה - והשולחן ערוך - פוסק בנגלה דתורה - אשר בדורנו אלה אין להתענות הרבה, וכלשונו באגרת התשובה פ"ג אסור להרבות בתעניות, ובפרט כשנוסף על חלישות הכללית של הדור הנה נמצא הוא בטפול רופאים, וגם אפילו את"ל שסו"ס יש מקום גם לתעניות, הרי יש לעשות בתחלה שאר הענינים ולא בדבר המחליש את הגוף (התענית) שבמילא מחליש ג"כ ההבנה בלימוד וההתבוננות בעבודת התפלה שחלישות הגוף מבלבל זה.

ובמילא לדעתי הנה ירבה באותיות התורה ובאותיות התפלה וימצא אופן לפעול בשדה החינוך של ילדי ישראל על טהרת הקדש, אם בעצמו או על ידי שיעשה וימשיך אחרים לזה, ויקבע שיעור מיוחד קבוע - בזמן וכן קביעות בנפש - בלימוד פנימיות התורה שבדורנו זה נתגלתה בתורת החסידות שבלשון הזהר נקרא אילנא דחיי שאין שם אחיזה ללעומת זה, ובפרט הוא אחד התקונים לעון הידוע וכמבואר בכמה ספרים, וכל המוסיף הרי פסקו רז"ל שמוסיפין לו ולכל לראש בהצלחה בעבודה זו גופא.

בברכה להטבת בריאותו בגשמיות ולהטבת בריאותו ברוחניות, אשר אצל איש ואשה הישראלית שהם גוי אחד בארץ היינו שממשיכים האחדות בכל עניניהם הרי יחדיו ילכון.
