To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, the Rav Chaim Dov (Rav Ch. D. Shevel),

Greetings and blessing,

For a certain reason, I did not acknowledge receipt of your book on education, published with an explanatory foreword, and you will kindly excuse me.

May Hashem cause that you adorn and embellish the Torah through such accomplishments, in addition to the action you conduct for your community, as leader and spiritual guide, so that it be in the image of the title that was formerly conferred, that of "holy community."

One achieves this by introducing holiness into one's daily existence, in a concrete manner. Our Sages affirm that Hashem demands only in accordance with the strength that men possess. It is therefore certain that you have the strength to carry out this mission.

On the occasion of the new year, which approaches, for us and for all Israel, for good and for blessing, I send my wishes to you, as well as to all of yours, that you be inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year, materially and spiritually.

N.B.: As a mark of affection, I leafed through your notes and commentaries and I formulated several remarks, which I reproduce further on (these comments of the Rebbe have not reached us).

On this occasion, I will also formulate a remark on the article you devote to the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya* and the Shulchan Aruch*, in your book in English on the leaders of the Jewish people. One finds therein, indeed, several imprecisions. I am surprised that you did not address yourself to the office here, for you surely know that several books on Chabad*, its teaching, its founder, and his successors have been published.

מסיבה נתאחר אישור קבלת ספרו החינוך שהו"ל בצירוף מבוא הערות וכו' ואתו הסליחה.

ויה"ר מהשי"ת לזכותו להגדיל תורה ולהאדירה ע"י פעולות מעין הנ"ל, נוסף על פעולתו בקהלתו בתור מנהיג ומשפיע רוחני שתהי' מתאימה לשם הניתן לקהלת ישראל מימי קדם "קהלה קדישא" שזהו תלוי בקדושה בחיי היום יומים במעשה בפועל, וכיון שכמרז"ל ה' אינו מבקש אלא לפי כחן בטח ניתנו לו הכחות למלאות שליחות זו.

ולקראת השנה החדשה הבאה עלינו ועל כל ישראל לטובה ולברכה הנני בזה להביע ברכתי לו ולכל אשר לו, ברכת כתיבה וחתימה טובה לשנה טובה ומתוקה בגשמיות וברוחניות.
