To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, the Rav Pinchas Todros (Rav P. T. Althuis; see, concerning him, letter no. 1495),
Greetings and blessing,
I duly received your letter of 21 and 22 Elul*, with what was enclosed. I am surprised at the delay you took in writing it. Moreover, it was also delayed in transit. I thank you once again for having arranged the placement of the tombstone (of the Rav Yisrael Aryeh Leib Schneerson, the Rebbe's brother) and for having kept me informed.
You tell me that this stone was placed along the length of the body and not at the head. If the others are also oriented in this manner, nothing should be changed. On the other hand, if this is not the case, no modification should be made contrary to the custom in this cemetery. If there is no other solution, you will make a second stone and place it as for the other graves. Nevertheless, you indicate to me that many tombstones are placed thus in Tzfas* and you therefore reassure me.
With my blessing, that you be definitively inscribed for a good year,

מאשר הנני קבלת מכתבו מכ"א וכ"ב אלול עם המצורפים אליהם, ולפלא שעכב את כתיבתו ונתעכבו ג"כ המכתבים בהילוכם, ואכפול תודתי על הקמת המצבה וגם על הודעתו עד"ז.
ומה שכותב שהוקמה לאורך הגוף לא לצד הראש, הנה אם ישנם שם מצבות באופן כזה יש להניח כמו שהוא אבל באם לאו הרי אין לשנות מהנהוג בבית חיים זה ואם אי אפשר אחרת יש לעשות מצבה אחרת ולהקימה כמו שאר המצבות, אבל מניח את דעתי שכותב שהרבה מצבות מונחות באופן כזה בצפת...
