To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, the Rav Avraham Mordechai Shmuel (Rav A. M. Sh. Lieder, of Jerusalem),

Greetings and blessing,

I reply to your letter of 23 Elul* and to the request for blessing that accompanied it. You tell me that you teach: "Kamatz*, Alef*, A" — that is to say, the vowels and the consonants separately (see, on this subject, letter no. 2325), in conformity with the directives of our holy masters, who did everything in their power that it be so (so that the whole-word method be rejected).

You ask me which pronunciation you should teach, the students in your class being of Yemenite origin.

For many generations, our Sephardic brethren have been accustomed to their pronunciation. There is therefore no reason to change their custom, since they must maintain those of their ancestors. Without any doubt, by studying Chassidus* with a Sephardic pronunciation, which they hold from their parents and the parents of their parents, who gave of themselves to sanctify the Name of Hashem, they will bring pleasure to HaKadosh Baruch Hu* on high, and this will produce its effect here below.

You tell me that you participate in the study of the revealed part of the Torah and of Chassidus*. I am satisfied by this. In the coming year, you will surely intensify this practice and you know the ruling of our Sages according to which "to whoever adds (efforts to serve Hashem), one adds (heavenly blessings)."

With my blessing that you be definitively sealed for a good year,

במענה על מכתבו מכ"ג אלול והפ"נ המוסגר בו, בו כותב שלומד הוא קמ"ץ אל"ף א. היינו הנקוד והאותיות בנפרד כהוראת נשיאינו הק' אשר השתדלו בזה בחרף נפשם, ושואל איך להתנהג בלימוד ההברה כיון שכתתו היא מילדי התימנים.

הרי כיון שאחינו הספרדים הורגלו בהברה זו כמה דורות דור אחר דור, אין צריך לשנות מנהגם בזה שמנהג אבותיהם בידיהם, ובודאי חזרת דא"ח בהברה הספרדית שאוחזין בה מפני שקבלוה מאבות ואבות אבותיהם, בני מס"נ על שמו ית' תגרום נח"ר למעלה ותפעול פעולתה למטה.

נהניתי ממה שכותב שלוקח חלק בשיעורי הלימוד הן בנגלה והן בדא"ח, ובודאי לשנה הבע"ל יוסיף בזה וכבר ידוע פסק רז"ל כל המוסיף מוסיפין לו.
