Greetings and blessing,

I reply to your letter, in which you tell me that you are not at all attracted to your studies, that you do not deeply wish to continue them.

I have already written on this subject to some of your friends and I have said that to all students applies the affirmation of our holy Torah, Torah of life, according to which "whoever says he made efforts but did not find success — do not believe him."

Everything therefore depends on you, on your ardor and your constancy, on fixing your study in your mind and in time, on your respect for the schedule of this study. You must devote yourself fully to the study of the whole Torah of Hashem, without thinking of anything else, setting calculations aside. Then, it is certain that you will find success. Nevertheless, one must purify the receptacle containing the Torah — that is to say, the body — in particular regarding thoughts and speech (which are more interior to the personality than actions).

Consequently, you will observe the ritual immersion instituted by Ezra (by going to the Mikveh* every morning). You will be particularly scrupulous in the love you bear for your fellow. In general, you will have good conduct. You will study the inner teaching of the Torah (Chassidus*), which is its soul and vitality. It is in this way that you will also enliven the revealed part of the Torah.

May Hashem enable you to announce to me, on this subject, good news of yourself and of your friends. The sooner the better.

במענה על מכתבו, בו כותב שאיננו מרגיש חשק ורצון פנימי בלימודיו כו'.

הנה כבר כתבתי בזה לכמה מחבריו והוספתי שכל אברכי התלמידים בכלל זה שתורתנו הק' תורת חיים פסקה אשר יגעת ולא מצאת אל תאמין, ובמילא בידם הדבר שישתדלו בזה ע"י התמדה ושקידה ובקביעות בנפש נוסף על הקביעות בזמן בשמירת זמני וסדרי הלימוד ולעסוק בתורת ה' תורה תמימה במסירה ונתינה אמיתית מבלי מחשבות חוץ, חשבונות וכיוצא בזה, ואז מובטחים הם שיצליחו, אלא שצריך לטהר הכלי לקבלת התורה הוא הגוף ובפרט המחשבות ודבורים.

ולכן צריך להזהר בטבילת עזרא ולהזהר במצות אהבת ישראל ביותר וביותר ובמדות טובות בכלל ולעסוק בפנימיות התורה נשמתא דאורייתא וחיותה אשר עי"ז נתגלה החיות גם בנגלה דתורה, והשי"ת יצליחו לבשר טוב בכל הנ"ל, בין בהנוגע לעצמו והן בנוגע לחביריו, וההקדם בזה ישובח.
