Greetings and blessing,

I reply to your letter of 25 Tishrei*, in which you inform me of your birthday. You also tell me that you are strengthening yourself in study and you ask me how to protect yourself from the conduct that is known.

You indicate yourself, in your letter, one of the means to remedy it. You say that you manage to control yourself when you are at the Yeshivah*, but not when you are elsewhere. This also proves that you must strengthen yourself in your study, adopt conduct suited to the organization of the Yeshivah*. You will avoid bad company and attach yourself to good friends, who fear Hashem and are Chassidim*. Thus will be fulfilled for you the promise of our Sages according to which "when one makes efforts, these are crowned with success."

Regarding your birthday, may Hashem cause that you have a year of success, conduct imbued with a true fear of Hashem, profound and displayed at once. You will redouble your ardor in the study of Torah and the practice of the mitzvos*, which will be fixed in your soul and in time.

You will meditate on the beginning of Psalm 17, which you will begin reading on your birthday: "Hear my prayer, formulated by lips that know no malice." In such a case, precisely, "my judgment will be pronounced before You." You will consult, on this subject, the Bad Kodesh.

במענה על מכתבו מכ"ה תשרי, בו מודיע ע"ד יום ההולדת שלו וכן על שמתחזק בלימוד ושואל התאמצות בענין הידוע וכו'.

הרי במכתבו עצמו כותב אחד התיקונים בהודעתו אשר כשהוא נמצא בישיבה מחזיק את עצמו אבל כשבא... וכו' שגם זה הוכחה נוספת על ההכרה שיתאמץ בלימוד ובהנהגה מתאים לסדרי הישיבה, ויפרוש מחברים בלתי רצויים ויתדבק בחברים טובים יראי שמים וחסידים ואשר אז תקוים בו הבטחת רז"ל יגעת ומצאת.

ובקשר עם יום ההולדת שלו הנה יה"ר מהשי"ת שתהי' שנת הצלחה אצלו בהנהגה ביראת שמים אמיתית הן בפנימיות והן בחיצוניות ויוסיף אומץ בתורה ומצות בקביעות בנפש ובקביעות בזמן, ויתבונן בהתחלת קאפיטל טו"ב בתהלים שמתחיל עתה לומר מיום הולדתו, האזינה תפלתי בלא שפתי מרמה (אשר אז) מלפניך (דוקא) משפטי יצא (עיין בד קודש).
