To the honorable great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, who judges his community and leads it in righteousness, man of good deeds, the Rav Shoushen Cohen, president of the rabbinical court of the holy community of Djerba,

Greetings and blessing,

I received, with some delay, your letter of 28 Elul*. My response was moreover delayed due to the festivals of Tishrei* and my numerous activities. I ask you to excuse me.

The great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, man full of energy, of many accomplishments, the Rav Binyamin Eliyahu (Rav B. E. Gorodetsky, director of the refugee aid bureau of Paris), transmitted to me the details of your situation. We are seeking a man capable of going to your city, in order to found there, with the help of Hashem, a study hall for training rabbis.

I wish to contribute to strengthening the Torah and Judaism in your city, according to my abilities. I have therefore requested that a sum of fifty thousand francs be sent to you from our fund, as an exceptional grant. I would have liked to do a thousand times more, but unfortunately, I do not have the means (literally, "the handful does not sate the lion").

I hope to have good news of your positive accomplishments in preserving sacred values, the tradition of your ancestors and ours, in disseminating the Torah with a pure fear of Hashem and an effective practice of the mitzvos*. May Hashem come to your aid.

מכתב כת"ר מכ"ח אלול נתקבל באיחור קצת ונתאחר המענה שלי מפני החגים ומועדים דחודש תשרי ומרוב הטרדה העמוסה עלי, ואת כת"ר הסליחה.

הרה"ג והרה"ח וו"ח אי"א נו"מ עוסק בצרכי צבור בעל מרץ ורב פעמים וכו' מוהר"ר בנימין אלי' שי' מסר לי מפרטי מצבם, והננו מחפשים אדם מתאים לנסוע למחנם להוציא לפועל ענין הקמת בית מדרש לרבנים בעזר השי"ת.

וברצותי להשתתף בעבודת החזקת התורה והיהדות במחנם הט' כפי שידי מגעת צויתי להמציא להם מקופתנו סכום של חמשים אלף פרנק בתור עזר חד-פעמי, ומי יתן ויכולתי לעשות אלף פעמים ככה, אבל דא עקא שאין הקומץ מספיק.

והנני מקוה לקבל ידיעות טובות מכת"ר ומעבודתם הטובה לשמור משמרת הקדש מסורת אבותיהם ואבותינו הק' והרבצת תורה ביראת שמים טהורה וקיום מצוותי' בפועל, וסייעתא דשמיא תהא בסעדהון.
