To the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, the Rav Shimon,

Greetings and blessing,

I am very surprised not to have received a letter from you for a long time already, nor from your colleagues of the young people of the Chabad* association of Jerusalem. Now, you should have written to me in detail and at length to tell me how the month of Tishrei* went, the Days of Awe and the days of joy.

If at all times one thirsts to receive good news, how much more so at the present time. I hope you will complete all of this at the next opportunity. You will urge your colleagues to do the same. Let each one write in detail, even about what is general, so that it not be "the cauldron belonging to the partners" (where no one takes responsibility because everyone relies on the other).

Following up on the conduct one must adopt during Chassidic* gatherings — which are numerous during the month of Tishrei* — I will reproduce here a brief excerpt of a letter written to the leaders of the Chassidim* in another location. It shows how important it is that the joy of Shabbos* and the festivals be celebrated not only in the synagogue during these gatherings, but also in the home of each of the Chassidim*.

These gatherings will therefore be organized during the propitious time of Shabbos* and the festivals, in such a way that one can also explain their content to the members of one's family, in the appropriate manner and with the appropriate words. On these days, there is surely enough time to hold such a gathering as is necessary and to gladden one's wife and children in the appropriate manner.

Obviously, no specific instructions will be given to each person in this matter, for everything depends on the individuals. But in any case, all will be able to deduce what they must do for themselves and for their family.

It is clear that I am indeed referring here to all the Chassidim*. You may therefore disseminate these few lines to your friends. I specify that this is in no way an invitation for you to invest in the attractions of the world and its values. Chassidic* education is a necessity and it must produce its effect in this regard. It is therefore indispensable to pray at length, to participate in a Chassidic* gathering.

Despite all of this, it remains possible to involve the members of one's family, and it is therefore necessary that this be so. They must give their full agreement in this matter, and after a brief reflection, you will find the words to explain it to them.

לפלא גדול שזה זמן רב ביותר, שלא נתקבל ממנו כל מכתב, וגם לא מחבריו דצעירי אגו"ח דירושת"ו, אף שבודאי צריכים היו לכתוב בפרטיות ובארוכה, איך שנצלו ימי חדש תשרי, הן בימים הנוראים והן בימים השמחים, והרי בכל הזמנים היו צמאים לקבל בשו"ט, ועאכו"כ בימינו אלה, ותקותי שימלאו את זה בהזדמנות הכי קרובה. וכן יזרז גם את חבריו הנ"ל, שכאו"א יכתוב בעניניו בפרטיות ואפילו גם בענינים הכללים שלא יהי' כענין של קדירה דבי שותפי'.

ובהמשך להנהגות בעת התועדויות, ומצוי' ביותר בעת התועדות דחדש תשרי, הנני מעתיק כאן בקצרה מכתב לראשי אנ"ש במקום אחר, והוא אשר נחוץ הדבר ביותר, ששמחת שבת ויו"ט תהי' לא רק בבית הכנסת ובמקום התועדות, אלא גם בביתו של כאו"א מאנ"ש.

ובמילא - לסדר ההתועדות באופן כזה שתהי' זמן בהעת רצון דשבת ויו"ט להסביר לב"ב הענינים באופן המתאים ובאותיות המתאימות לפניהם. ובודאי יש די זמן בימים אלו גם להתועדות כדבעי וגם לשמח האשה והבנים כדבעי. מובן שאין לתת בזה הוראות פרטיות לכאו"א, כי הדבר תלוי במהותם הפרטי, אבל בודאי שכל אחד יכול ללמוד מנקודה זו הנהגה בהנוגע אליו ולביתו...

מובן שכוונתי בזה לכל אנ"ש, ובמילא הרשות בידו לפרסם תוכן שורותי אלה בין חביריו. ובהוספה, אשר פשיטא שאין כוונתי כלל וכלל שיהיו מושקעים בהוויות העולם ובהנחות העולם, ובודאי שחינוך חסידותי צריך ומוכרח שישפיע בענינים הנ"ל, היינו באריכות זמן התפלה בהתועדות וכו', אבל לאחר כל זה יש אפשריות, ומוכרח שינצלוה, שגם הב"ב ישתתפו, על ידי הסכמתם המלאה, בענינים אלו, ובהתבוננות קלה יש למצוא האותיות במה להסבירה...
