To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and carries out a sacred mission, the Rav Chaim Mendel (Rav Ch. M. Rosenberg),

Greetings and blessing,

I reply to your letter of 8 Marcheshvan* and may Hashem cause you to succeed in your sacred mission, that of directing the studies of the students of the Yeshivah* Toras Emes (of Jerusalem).

You know that the responsibility of a study director is much greater than that of a teacher or a rector of a Yeshivah*. Indeed, he participates in their study and does so in their presence. In this matter, the opposition from the other side (from the forces of evil) is not very strong, for the Torah is "the bread of heaven" and "the words of the Torah cannot contract impurity," having, intrinsically, no waste. Likewise, the study of the student is not determinative either, for "if he has no merit, it becomes for him (a fatal poison)."

The function of the study director consists in verifying that the Torah effectively penetrates the student, as our holy masters emphasize. The student must become one with it, to the point that it becomes a part of himself, "his Torah," for "the Torah and Israel are one."

Now, it is precisely against this that the evil inclination enters into battle, drawing the animal soul along with it, with all its strength. Nevertheless, our Sages emphasize that the one responsible for the well itself receives his appointment from heaven. It is therefore certain that you have the strength necessary to assume this function. And everything depends only on your goodwill. May Hashem cause you to soon be able to say: "See the fruits that I have made grow."

With my blessing and in anticipation of your good news,

N.B.: It is surely unnecessary to remind you of the following. Physically, the vitality of the body is conditioned by the revelation of the soul. And, obviously, the same applies to the body and soul of the Torah (the study of Chassidus* vivifies the study of the revealed part of the Torah).

במענה על מכתבו מח' מ"ח, הנה יה"ר מהשי"ת שיצליח במלאכת שמים - השגחה על תלמידי ישיבת תורת אמת.

וכבר ידוע, אשר אחריות המשגיח היא גדולה פי כמה [מ]אחריות הר"מ והר"י, כי הרי עליהם ללמוד התורה עם התלמידים ולפניהם, שבזה אין התנגדות כ"כ מהלעו"ז, כיון שהתורה היא לחם מן השמים ודברי תורה אין מקבלים טומאה, שמצד עצמם אין בם פסולת, וכן מצד הלומד לא תמיד נוגע כ"כ, כיון שאם ח"ו לא זכה נעשית לו כו' - משא"כ על המשגיח לראות שהתורה תלמדהו , כפתגם נשיאנו הק', שמתעצם עמה עד שנקראת תורתו , דאורייתא וישראל כולא חד, ונגד זה נלחם היצה"ר ומושך עמדו גם את הנה"ב - בכל תוקף, אבל כיון שכמרז"ל אפי' ריש גרגותא הרי מן שמיא קא ממנו לי' - בודאי ניתנו לו הכחות למלאות תפקידו זה, ואין הדבר תלוי אלא ברצונו הטוב. ויצליחו השי"ת שלאחר זמן קצר יוכל לאמר ראו גידולים שגדלתי.

בודאי למותר לעוררו אשר כמו שבחיות הגוף הגשמי, אפילו החיות שבהגוף מצד עצמו, מתחזק ומתוסף ע"י גילוי החיות הנשמה, כן הוא בהנוגע לגופא דאורייתא ולנשמתא דאורייתא כמובן.
