To the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, the Rav Yitzchak Zalman (Rav I. Z. Pozner; see, concerning him, letters no. 2411, 3114, and 3269),

Your father-in-law, the great Rav and Chassid* Sh. A. (Rav Shlomo Aharon Kazarnovski) showed me your letter concerning the curtain of the Holy Ark, what you explained on this subject, and the discussion between Tosafos* and Rashi* in tractate Megillah* 22b.

In fact, this controversy between Rashi* and Tosafos* pertains solely to the presence of this curtain inside the Holy Ark, but not to the concrete reality (see, on this subject, letter no. 3114). One can therefore, on the contrary, derive from this text a proof that a curtain was indeed hung in the Holy Ark.

Nevertheless, a risk exists if one does the same (in the Holy Ark of a synagogue) at the present time, even though another curtain also covers the Holy Ark from the outside, since such a practice has never existed in the synagogues in these recent generations.

You know how much one hesitates to modify customs, even if no prohibition is transgressed thereby. Moreover, in this country, the synagogues need to be particularly strengthened.

You did not specify to which fund your check was addressed. I have therefore transmitted it to the bureau of confidential activities, since this is the most elevated form of Tzedakah*.

... הראה לי חותנו הרה"ג והרה"ח כו' הרש"א שי' מכתבו אודות פרוכת בתוך הארון קדש. ומה שהעיר עד"ז והפלוגתא שבין תוס' ורש"י במגילה כ"ב ע"ב.

אבל המחלוקת שבין רש"י ותוספת הוא רק בדין הפרוכת אם תהי' בתוך הארון קדש אבל אין זה פלוגתא במציאות. ולכן משם אדרבה ראי' שהיתה הנהגה כזו לתלות פרוכת בתוך הארון קדש. ואעפ"כ יש חשש בדבר לתלות עתה בזמנינו הפרוכת בתוך הארון קדש אף אם תהי' פרוכת גם על הארון הוא מפני שזהו שינוי במנהג בית הכנסת בני ישראל בדורות האחרונים עכ"פ. וידוע עד כמה הקפידו על שינוי המנהגים אף בדברים שלא הי' בהם חשש של איסור וכיו"ב, ובפרט במנהגי בית הכנסת שבמדינה זו שצריכים חיזוק ביותר .

כיון שלא הורה לאיזה קופה שולח המחאתו, הנה נמסרה ללשכת חשאין, שהיא ממעלות המעולות דמצות הצדקה.
