To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, who carries out a sacred mission, the Rav Moshe Aryeh Leib (Rav M. A. L. Shapiro; see, concerning him, letter no. 2482),

Greetings and blessing,

After a long silence, I received with pleasure your letter of 22 Marcheshvan*, which announced to me good news — the fact that benches have been added (new students have been enrolled) in the Yeshivah* of our holy masters, whose merit will protect us, that of Toras Emes* (in Jerusalem). Above all, the study of the revealed part of the Torah and of Chassidus* has progressed quantitatively and qualitatively.

Our Sages say that "the action, and not the study, is essential." This addition must therefore exert its effect also on the fervency of the prayer, the fulfillment of the Mitzvos* in the best manner and, in particular, the manner of studying.

May Hashem cause one to rise from one stage to the next. You know what our Sages say on this subject. The Alter Rebbe*, in his Shulchan Aruch* Orach Chaim, beginning of chapter 155, cites the Targum* on Tehillim*. He thus indicates, by way of allusion, that before and after the study, one must go to the synagogue. And the Targum* concludes: "They will see their Torah in the presence of Hashem, Who reveals Himself in Tzion*."

I thank you for having sent me Torah periodicals — the Ohel Torah and the Toras Eretz Yisrael — as I had asked you, as well as the notes you have written on the Ketzos HaChoshen*. No doubt you will continue, in the future, to seek out and send me such publications. I thank you in advance.

I conclude on a positive note by referring to the birth of the son of your daughter Tzira Beila, which you announced to me at a good moment. He was named Yisrael Chaim. Just as his parents enabled him to enter the covenant of our father Avraham, Hashem will cause them to lead him to Torah, to the wedding canopy, and to good deeds. And you yourself will derive from all your children a genuine Chassidic* satisfaction.

לאחרי שתיקתו הארוכה נעם לי לקבל מכתבו מכ"ב מ"ח בבשורה הטובה, אשר נתוספו ספסלי בישיבת נשיאינו הק' זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע תורת אמת. והעיקר אשר נתוסף גם בכמות גם באיכות לימוד הנגלה ולימוד החסידות. ובודאי ע"פ מרז"ל לא המדרש עיקר אלא המעשה, ניכרת תוספת זו הן בעבודת התפלה וקיום המצות בהידור והן בהלימוד גופא בפרט.

ויה"ר שילכו מחיל אל חיל, וידוע דרז"ל בזה. וכיון שרבנו הזקן (שו"ע או"ח ריש סי' קנ"ה) מציין לעיין בתרגום תהלים שם, י"ל בכוונתו לרמז ג"כ שהתורה צריכה ביהכ"נ לפני' וביהכ"נ לאחרי' וכמו שמסיים שם בתרגום יתחמי לעות אוריתא דילהון קדם ד' דשכינתיה שריא בציון.

ת"ח על טרחתו במלוי בקשתי לשלוח לכאן ירחוני תורה, אהל תורה, ותורת ארץ ישראל, וכן הגליונות שמדפיס בהערות על ספר קצות החשן. ובודאי גם על להבא ינהג כן בחיפוש ושילוח עניני דפוס מסוג ועל דרך הנ"ל ות"ח ת"ח מראש.

ואסיים בדבר טוב במענה על בשורתו אשר נולד בן למזל טוב לבתו מרת צירה ביילה תחי' ונקרא שמו בישראל חיים שי'. הנה יה"ר מהשי"ת שכשם שהכניסוהו הוריו שיחיו לבריתו של אברהם אבינו כן יכניסוהו לתורה ולחופה ולמעשים טובים וכת"ר ירווה מכל יו"ח שיחיו רוב נחת חסידותי אמיתי.
