I bless you and greet you (this letter is addressed to a woman),

I reply to your letter, sent by messenger, in which you tell me that you have been residing in this city for several years already. Yet you do not see a positive outcome, as there should be, for the young people identify very little with the Orthodox milieu and even the older ones are weakening in their Jewish commitment.

In fact, you should have posed such a question to those who are in your city and not in New York. It is said, indeed, that an effort is never in vain. How then is it possible that, after having worked in a city for five years, the situation there is what you describe in your letter?

It seems to me that one of the explanatory elements is the following. You regard this city as a temporary place of work (in English in the text: "job") and you always wait for summer to think about leaving and looking for another city. Human nature causes one not to invest one's interest and one's deep strength in what one keeps only for a few months. One tells oneself, indeed, that one is leaving soon.

You know the saying of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit will protect us, according to which one must draw a lesson by considering the Sanctuary (see, on this subject, letter no. 3314). At certain stages of the desert, one stayed only a single day or a single night. Despite this, one built the Sanctuary, with everything that constituted it, just as in the place where one remained for eighteen years.

There is a lesson here for everyone. One must serve Hashem and carry out the mission one has received here below without consulting the calendar and the watch, without telling oneself that eighteen years must be taken into account while a day or a night is negligible. For Hashem is eternal and the actions performed by man to attach himself to Him are likewise eternal. Even if, in a few minutes, one will adopt another activity, what has been accomplished until now is no less immutable, as chapter 25 of the Tanya* explains.

Concretely, it seems to me that your husband, the Rav, has, last year as in previous years, sought other positions with the greatest energy. He has found nothing that suited him and you must both see therein the proof that your place is still in this city. For when the Creator, the Holy One, blessed be He, entrusts a mission, He also grants the means to carry it out.

Certainly, nothing can be stated with certainty. Nevertheless, there is every reason to think that the more quickly you fulfill the mission entrusted to you in this place, the sooner you will go to a place that combines more qualities. For the mission of a Jew, and especially of a Rav and a Rebbetzin*, consists in disseminating the Torah and Judaism.

May Hashem grant you success in accomplishing all of this with joy, in accordance with the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov*, which applies to all Jews in all domains: "Serve Hashem with joy."

במענה על מכתבה המהיר ,בו כותבת שכבר נמצאת כמה שנים ב ..

.ואינה רואה כל תקוה לעתיד טוב כראוי ,כי הצעירים שייכים מעט

לקהילה החרדית ,והמבוגרים נחלשים יותר וכו׳.

לאמיתו של דבר ,זוהי שאלה שהי׳ עלי׳ לשאול אצל אלו הנמצאים

בעירה ולא לשאול זאת בניו יורק .שכן ,בידיעת החזקה לתעמולה

שאינה חוזרת ריקם ,כיצד זה שלאחר חמש שנות עבודה בעיר ,המצב

הינו כפי שמתארת במכתבה .והנני משער שאחת הסיבות לכך היא,

שלמרבה הצער המבט שלה על . . .הוא כעל משרה זמנית ,וכל פעם

בקושי ממתינים לקיץ כדי לחשוב ולחפש עיר אחרת .וזה כבר טבוע

בטבע האדם ,שדבר שמתייחסים אליו שהוא רק לכמה חודשים ,אין זה

מעורר ענין והפניית כוחות ,כי חושבים שתיכף נוסעים מכאן.

ידוע הפתגם של חמי כ״ק אדמו״ר זצוקללה״ה נבג״מ זי״ע ,שיש

ללמוד מהמשכן ,שכאשר היו במדבר ,היו מקומות שחנו בהם רק יום או

לילה ,אך אעפ״כ הקימו את המשכן על כל פרטיו בדיוק כפי שעשו זאת

במקום שעמדו בו 18שנה .שזהו מוסר השכל לכל יהודי ,להתנהג

בפעולותיו לעבודת השי״ת ולמלא את השליחות שלו מהקב״ה בעלמא

דין ,שאין להביט על הלוח ועל השעון ,כדי לחשב ,שאם זה ל 18-שנה,

הדבר משתלם ואם רק ליום או לילה ,הרי נעשה רק לצאת ידי חובה ,כי

כשם שהקב״ה הוא נצחי ,כך גם כל הפעולות של יהודי הקשורות עם

הקב״ה הן נצחיות .גם אם כעבור כמה דקות היהודי כבר עסוק בדבר

אחר ,הפעולות נשארות לנצח לעולם ועד ,כמבואר בתניא פרק כ״ה.

בנוגע לפועל ,עד כמה שידוע לי ,חיפש בעלה הרב שי׳ ,די במרץ,

משרות אחרות ,הן בשנה האחרונה וגם בשנים הקודמות .והעובדה שלא

נמצא דבר מתאים ,צריכה לשמש כהוכחה שהם שניהם צריכים עדיין

לפעול ב . . .בשליחות הבורא ברוך הוא .והקב״ה ,כשהוא נותן שליחות,

נותן הוא גם את האפשרויות שהנשלח יוכל למלא את השליחות ,ואין

אתנו יודע עד מה .אבל מסתבר ,שככל שישתדלו למלא את השליחות

כפי שצריך )שהשליחות של כל יהודי ,ובפרט רב ורבנית שיחיו,

מתבטאת בהפצת תורה ויהדות( תוכלו לעבור למקום שיש לו יותר

מעלות מאשר . . .מוקדם יותר והשי״ת יצליח שתעשו זאת מתוך

שמחה ,כהוראת הבעל שם טוב לכל היהודים ובכל הענינים ,עבדו את ד׳

בשמחה.
