Greetings and blessing,

I reply to your letter of 26 Marcheshvan*. At its beginning, you are in fact asking why "the wicked prosper." It is surely unnecessary to tell you that this question is very old, that it dates from the era of the giving of the Torah or close to it, as tractate Berachos* 7a relates.

My father-in-law, the Rebbe, wrote to one of the students of the Yeshivah*: "You too wonder why?" (see, on this subject, letters no. 2891 and 3303). And he concluded his letter by asking him to assume the mission entrusted to him rather than to ask questions. Indeed, the answer in this matter belongs to Hashem (Who determines why one man is happy and another suffers). Moreover, it has not been observed until now that anyone has been able to derive any benefit, material or spiritual, from meditating on this question.

I also reply to what you tell me in your letter, the fact that you have no one from whom to take counsel. Your personality surely has a profound dimension and you know, deep within yourself, that you can consider confiding in a certain person. Moreover, it is said that "salvation is obtained through many counselors." It is therefore not asked of you to accept this counsel with submission.

במענה על מכתבו מכ"ו מ"ח, אשר נקודת תוכן התחלת המכתב - מדוע דרך רשעים צלחה, הרי בודאי למותר להאריך שזוהי קושיא ישנה מימות מתן תורה - סמוך לזה - וכמובא ברכות ז' ע"א. וכתב כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר לאחד התמימים: דו ליגסט אויך אין דער שאלה מדוע כו'. ומסיים שם במכתבו, שצריך להתעסק במילוי תפקידו ולא בתירוץ שאלות, שהתירוץ בזה שייך להשי"ת. ובפרט שלע"ע לא ראינו אף אחד שההתבוננות בשאלה זו הועילה לו אם בגשמיות או בענינים רוחניים.

במענה על מכתבו שאין לו עם מי להתייעץ, כיון שלכל אחד יש פני' הרי יודע הוא שפני' לפב"פ בודאי יכול להביא גם את זה בחשבון. וגם בכגון דא נאמר ותשועה ברוב יועץ, כי הרי אין עליו לקבל העצה בתור קבלת עול...
