and devotes himself to communal needs,

Greetings and blessing,

I thank you for your letter of 7 Kislev*, informing me of good news — the public classes you are giving. I have already told several Chassidim* that it is judicious and important to establish a study of the laws necessary for daily existence (see letters no. 3048, 3091 and 3105), in addition to all the other teachings, for ultimately such is the purpose of man: "You shall fear Hashem and observe His Mitzvos*."

Nowadays, capacities are weakened and one therefore devotes less time to Torah* study. One must consequently choose a book whose content is directly applicable to concrete action, which states the decided Halachah*. And one will begin with the most common and usual laws. To the extent possible, one will even omit what has less bearing on practice. Then Hashem will grant success and one will be able to return to this study. It is then that one will also study those paragraphs.

You will surely organize a Chassidic* farbrengen* for 19 Kislev*, which is approaching, in the appropriate manner — that is, by taking good resolutions there that will be applied concretely, in the three domains of the service of Hashem: Torah*, prayer and good deeds. May Hashem grant you success.

ת"ח על מכתבו מז' כסלו מבשר טוב מהשיעורים הנלמדים ברבים. וכבר מלתי אמורה לכו"כ מאנ"ש אשר לדעתי נכון ונחוץ להנהיג לימוד הלכות הצריכות בחיי היום יומים נוסף על שאר הלימודים כיון שסו"ס זהו כל האדם את האלקים ירא ואת מצותיו שמור, ובדורנו זה שנתמעטו הלבבות ובמילא נתמעט הזמן המוקדש ללימוד שיעורים, צריך ללמדם בספר שבו דינים הנוגעים למעשה והלכה ברורה ופסוקה, ולהתחיל באותן ההלכות השכיחות ורגילות יותר, ואם באפשרי הרי בהם גופא לדלג הענינים שאינם נוגעים כ"כ, וכשיצליח השי"ת וילמדו בפעם השני' יש ללמוד על הסדר.

בודאי יתועדו בחג הגאולה י"ט כסלו הבע"ל כדבעי, היינו בקבלת החלטות בהנוגע לפועל בשלשת הקוים דתורה עבודה וגמילות חסדים והשי"ת יצליחם.
