To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself
to communal needs, Rav David (Rav D. Gertner),

Greetings and blessing,

I received with pleasure your letter of Sunday of Parshas* Vayishlach*, which came after a long silence. You inform me of good news — the birth of your son, at a good moment, and that he was named Yisrael Yosef. Just as you have brought him into the covenant (of our father Avraham, that of circumcision), you will lead him, together with your wife, to Torah*, to the wedding canopy and to good deeds.

With my blessing of Mazal Tov*,

P.S.: I am surprised that, in this same letter, you say nothing of the action you are carrying out among your surroundings to disseminate therein "the candle that is a Mitzvah* and the Torah* that is a light," as well as the light of the Torah* — the teaching of Chassidus*, its practices and its ways.

Those who possess a scientific education have a specific responsibility in this area, in accordance with the statement of the Alter Rebbe*, author of the holy Tanya* and decisor of the hidden part of the Torah*, author of the Shulchan Aruch* and decisor of the revealed part of the Torah*. Citing the Sages, he explains, indeed, at the end of the eighth chapter of the holy Tanya*, that "that (the utensil) which is used cold (to contain what is not kosher*) shall be rinsed cold; that which is used in contact with fire shall be brought to white heat by fire" (a greater investment in the study of secular sciences must therefore result in an increased engagement in Jewish practice).

I learned with pleasure that you frequent the prayer service of the youth of the Chabad* Association. May Hashem grant that it develop quantitatively and qualitatively.

לפלא שגם במכתבו זה אינו מזכיר ע"ד פעולותיו בסביבתו להפיץ שם נר מצוה ותורה אור ומאור שבתורה זוהי תורת החסידות הדרכותי' ומנהגי', אשר חוב מיוחד בזה הוא על אותם שעסקו במדעים מתאים למ"ש רבנו הזקן בעל התניא קדישא - פוסק בנסתר דתורה - והשולחן ערוך - פוסק בנגלה דתורה - בספרו התניא קדישא סוף פרק ח' וע"פ פסק רז"ל אשר דבר שתשמישו בצונן מדיחו בצונן ואת שתשמישו באור צריך ללבנו באור.
