Greetings and blessing,

I have received your letter. You ask me about the curtain of the Holy Ark* (see, on this subject, letter no. 3044). I am surprised that you did not interpret my words in the simplest manner. My aim was not to show that there is a curtain on the outside of the Holy Ark*. No one disputes this. The point was, in fact, to find a source establishing that there is another one on the inside of it.

Consequently, all the references you cite to show that there was a curtain on the outside are merely, to use the familiar expression, "breaking down an open door." I was writing, for my part, that one could draw proof of the presence of a curtain on the inside from the commentaries of Rashi* and even of the Tosafos* on tractate Megillah*.

You will surely take advantage of the luminous day of 19 Kislev*, then of the days of Chanukah*, to impart to the students, boys and girls, as well as to adults who are many in years but still children in the level of their knowledge, the lesson that these dates deliver for daily existence. And when one opens like the point of a needle, the Holy One, blessed be He, opens like the portal of the Sanctuary (in which the Holy Ark* was found).

I was mentioning (in letter no. 3044) "these latter generations" solely to say that the curtain is now placed only on the outside.

מכתבו נתקבל. ומ"ש אודות ענין הפרוכת, לפלא שלא פירש כוונתי כמו שהיא, כי הרי אין הענין להביא ראי' שהיתה פרוכת מבחוץ לארון קדש כי אין בזה פלוגתא ולא נצרכה אלא למקור שיש מקום לפרוכת מבפנים בארון הקדש, ובמילא כל המקומות שמביא ראי' שמוכח שהיתה פרוכת מבחוץ הוא כמאמר העולם, שלאגט זיך אין א אפענער טיר. ומה שכתבתי אני היינו שמרש"י ואפי' מתוספות במגילה מוכח שהי' פרוכת גם מבפנים.

בודאי ינצלו יום הבהיר י"ט כסלו וכן ימי החנוכה להחדיר בהתלמידים והתלמידות וכן בהגדולים בשנים וקטנים בדיעה, מוסר השכל בימים אלה בהנוגע לחיי היום יומים, וכשפותחים כחודה של מחט פותח הקב"ה כפתחו של אולם.

מש"כ "בדורות האחרונים" - היינו שאז פרוכת רק בחוץ.
