and devotes himself to communal needs,

Greetings and blessing,

I received with pleasure your letter of 8 Kislev*, in which you describe to me the organization of studies and the nature of the students in the various classes. May Hashem grant you success so that you accomplish your mission of drawing the hearts of the children of Israel closer to their Father Who is in Heaven, by giving them a good education. You know that, according to the explanation of the Alter Rebbe*, one thereby obtains "a mind and a heart a thousand times more refined" (see, on this subject, letter no. 3101).

You mention the study on Friday evening. To the extent possible, it would be good for it to deal with the Parshah* of the week, with the commentary of Rashi*, with the abridged Shulchan Aruch* on the laws of Shabbos*, and with Chassidus*, according to the level of the students.

You know the proposal I have made to several schools (see, on this subject, letters no. 3048, 3091, 3105 and 3106) — that of studying the Halachos* necessary for daily existence. You will begin with the most common laws, for example those of the blessings. Ultimately, such is the purpose of man, as it is said: "You shall fear Hashem and observe His Mitzvos*."

שלום וברכה!

נעם לי לקבל מכתבו מח' כסלו, בו כותב אודות סדר הלימוד ומהות התלמידים בכתות השונות. והשי"ת יצליחו למלאות תפקידו לקרב לבם של בנ"י לאבינו שבשמים ע"י החינוך הנכון. וכבר ידוע פס"ד של רבנו הזקן אשר עי"ז נעשים מוחו ולבו זכים אלף פעמים ככה.

מ"ש אודות הלימוד בליל שבת, הרי, אם יש מקום, צריך הי' לסדר שאז ילמדו פרשת השבוע עם פירוש רש"י, וקיצור שו"ע הלכות שבת, ודא"ח המתאים לפי השגת התלמידים. וכבר ידועה הצעתי לכמה מוסדות חינוך - שיקבעו שיעור בהלכות הצריכות בחיי היום יומים, ולהתחיל באותם הענינים התכופים ביותר וכמו ברכות הנהנין וכו', שהרי סו"ס זהו כל האדם את האלקים ירא ואת מצותיו שמור.

בברכת הצלחה בעבודתו בקדש מתוך בריאות הנכונה.
