Greetings and blessing,

I reply to your letter of 11 Kislev*. As you know, the Torah* was received when one proclaimed: "We shall do and (then) we shall hear" — that is, "we shall understand," as in the verse: "Speak, for your servant hears (that is, understands; the word Shema* has both meanings in Hebrew)." And our Sages emphasize that "we shall do" had to precede "we shall understand," thereby demonstrating the necessity of submission.

All of this must be repeated every day, as the Mishnah* states at the beginning of the second chapter of tractate Berachos*, regarding the Mitzvah* of Shema Yisrael*, which one is obligated to recite twice daily, in order to accept the yoke of the Heavenly Kingship (to submit oneself to Hashem) and that of the Mitzvos* (to submit oneself to His Commandments).

The same applies to you and your friends (presumably students of the Yeshivah*). Virtuous Jews surely wish to know success in the study of our holy Torah*, and there is no other means of achieving this than submission from the outset. You must conform to the opinion of the administration of the holy institution in which you pursue your studies, as it will be formulated after you have presented your explanations and justifications. You must accept the decision, and it is in this way that you will know success.

May Hashem grant that you be the positive emissary who will announce good news to me regarding all of this.

במענה על מכתבו מי"א כסלו. הנה ידוע שקבלת התורה בכללותה היתה באמירת נעשה ונשמע וביארו רז"ל שזהו דוקא על ידי הקדמת נעשה לנשמע (שפירושו הבנה והשגה ומלשון דבר כי שומע עבדך), היינו הענין דקבלת עול. ודבר זה צריך להיות נשנה בכל יום ויום וכפסק המשנה (ברכות ריש פרק ב') בנוגע למצות קריאת שמע שמחויב בה פעמיים בכל יום וענינה קבלת עול מלכות שמים וקבלת עול מצות.

וה"ה בנוגע אליו ולחבריו אשר בני ישראל הכשרים בודאי רצונם להצליח בלימוד תורתנו הק' ואין לזה דרך אחרת כי אם בהקדמת קבלת עול, היינו לשמוע להנהלת המוסד הק' בו לומדים לאחרי שיציעו לפניהם הטעמים והנימוקים שלהם, אבל אז עליהם להשמע להחלטתם וזוהי הדרך להצלחה, ובודאי ימסור כל זה גם לחבריו, ויה"ר שיהי' שליח טוב לבשרני טובות בכל זה.
