To the executive committee of the Pe'ilim*, in the United States,
may Hashem grant you long life,

Greetings and blessing,

I reply to your letter of the eve of last Shabbos*, in which you inform me of the meeting you are organizing on 26 Kislev*, with the aim of increasing the number of your members who are capable of carrying out activities in the domain of Torah*.

May Hashem grant that you succeed in channeling the strengths and aptitudes so as to uphold the Tradition of Israel in the place where you currently find yourselves — that is, in the United States — and also in our Holy Land, "toward which the eyes of Hashem are always turned, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year." There, your action is made more difficult because the aid that had been granted to you until now has diminished.

The period during which your meeting takes place is that of Chanukah*, commemorating the miracle that was performed so that the Menorah* in the Temple could be lit with pure oil, untouched by foreign hands. This will surely strengthen the resolution incumbent upon every Jewish man and woman — to illuminate the portion of the world entrusted to them with pure oil, with a pure light and Menorah*, through "the candle that is a Mitzvah* and the Torah* that is a light," as well as through the luminary of the Torah*, preserved from contact with foreign hands.

Admittedly, from the outset, few are those who take such a resolution with the necessary determination. But just as was the case "in those days," Hashem, "at this time," can, in His great mercy, place "the many in the hands of the few," in order to purify the Temple — that is, the surroundings of each man and woman — to light therein "the candle that is a Mitzvah* and the Torah* that is a light," founded upon the luminary of the Torah*, which is its inner teaching.

It is in this way that one illuminates the darkness of the night, with a light that goes ever increasing and brings elevation in the domain of Holiness.

במענה על מכתבם מעש"ק העבר בו מודיעים ע"ד הכינוס שמכינים ליום כ"ו כסלו הבע"ל כינוס שמטרתו להרבות חברים בחבר פעילי המחנה התורתי.

הנה יה"ר מהשי"ת אשר יצליחו לנצל את כחותיהם וכשרונותיהם להרים קרן ישראל סבא הן במקומם עתה היינו בארצות הברית והן בארצנו הקדושה ארץ אשר עיני ה' אלקיך בה מראשית השנה ועד אחרית שנה, שנרגשת שם כבדות בעבודתם מפני החלישות בסיוע שהיו מקבלים עד עתה מכאן.

ובימים המיועדים להועידה שלהם הם ימי חנוכה שענינו נס בכדי שיוכלו להדליק המנורה בבית המקדש בשמן טהור בלי מגע נכרים, בודאי יחזק גם זה את ההחלטה המוכרחת אשר על כל אחד ואחת מעם ישראל להאיר חלקו בעולם רק בשמן טהור ואור ומנורה טהורים של נר מצוה ותורה אור ומאור שבתורה מבלי מגע של ענין נכרי, ואף שבתחלה מעטים הם המחליטים בזה בתוקף המתאים. הרי כמו שהי' בימים ההם כן הוא גם בזמן הזה אשר השם ברחמיו הרבים מוסר רבים ביד מעטים ויכולים הם לטהר את המקדש, היינו סביבתו של כל אחד ואחת מבני ישראל ולהדליק שם נר המצוה ואור התורה מיוסדים על המאור שבתורה זוהי פנימיות התורה עד שמאירים חשכת הלילה באור ההולך ומוסיף ומעלים בקדש.
