To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,
Rav Yitzchak Yaakov (Rav I. Y. Nelson),

Greetings and blessing,

I reply to your letter of 24 Kislev*. I am surprised that you say nothing about what you did on the luminous day of 19 Kislev*, the date of the liberation of the Alter Rebbe*, founder of Chassidus* Chabad*, which is therefore also that of our deliverance and the freedom of our souls. In this matter, one should make up for it, even later, to the fullest extent possible. If you did not organize a Chassidic* farbrengen* on that date, you will therefore do so in the coming days.

You tell me that you cannot find anyone to assist you in your activities. My father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit will protect us, explains the expressions "one who occupies himself with Torah*, one who occupies himself with Mitzvos*" by reference to a business (see, on this subject, letter no. 3109), in which one does not wait for the customer to come on his own. Likewise, when one offers one's merchandise to someone and he refuses it, one is not affected by this. One knows, indeed, that one is not doing anyone a favor and that one is, in fact, seeking one's own good.

One must adopt the same attitude in spreading Torah* and Mitzvos*. As you know, our Sages emphasize that "the poor person does more for the rich person than the rich person does for the poor person." This is true for both material Tzedakah* and moral Tzedakah*. And it is certain that an effort is never in vain, even if some time sometimes elapses between the planting of the seed and the appearance of the harvest.

במענה על מכתבו מכ"ד כסלו. ולפלא שאינו מזכיר דבר מהנעשה ביום הבהיר הוא י"ט כסלו יום גאולת רבנו הזקן מיסד תורת חסידות חב"ד שבמילא זה גם גאולתנו ופדות נפשנו, וכיון שבענינים כאלו הרי גם לאחר זמן צריך למלאות עכ"פ כפי האפשרי, הנה אם לא התועדו ביום הנ"ל כדאי לעשות כזה באחד הימים הבאים.

ומה שכותב שאינו מוצא אפילו אחד שיעזרהו בפעולות כו', הרי ידוע ביאור כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע בלשון רז"ל העוסק בתורה, העוסק במצוה, שזה צ"ל ע"ד השתדלות בעסק שאינם מחכים שמי שהוא יתעורר מעצמו, וכן אין מתרשמים אם כשמציעים למי שהוא ואינו מרוצה, כיון שיודע הוא שאין הוא העושה טובה לאחרים, אלא שזהו טובת עצמו הוא, והנהגה כזו צריכה להיות בהפצת התורה והמצוה, וכבר ידוע פסק רז"ל, יותר ממה שהבעה"ב עושה עם העני העני עושה עם בעה"ב, שזה הן בצדקה גשמית והן בצדקה רוחנית, וחזקה לתעמולה שאינה חוזרת ריקם, אף שלפעמים עובר כמה זמן מזריעת הגרעין לצמיחת התבואה.
