and devotes himself to communal needs,

Greetings and blessing,

I received with pleasure your letter of 22 Kislev*, in which you describe the Chassidic* farbrengen* on the luminous day, the festival of liberation of 19 Kislev* — that of the Alter Rebbe* and also that of our liberation and the deliverance of our souls.

No doubt good decisions were taken on that occasion, to spread the wellsprings (of Chassidus*) outward and for all that concerns Torah* and Mitzvos*. This day is propitious, and the resolutions adopted then can be put into practice more easily. You will specify all of this to me at the next opportunity.

You ask me whether such a farbrengen* should take place in the synagogue or in the home of a Chassid*. In fact, both are necessary (literally: "Do not withdraw your hand from either one"), and both are very important. This question was posed to my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit will protect us, and he responded in this manner.

In general, one must also take into account the conditions of the place — the way to benefit from the advantages of a Chassidic* farbrengen* held in a public place, in a synagogue or house of study, and those of such a farbrengen* held in a private place, which also allows one to draw that home closer.

One must therefore opt sometimes for one, sometimes for the other, but it is clear that one cannot establish an absolute rule in this matter.

נעם לי לקבל מכתבו מכ"ב כסלו בו כותב אודות ההתועדות ביום הבהיר חג הגאולה י"ט כסלו גאולת רבנו הזקן וגאולתנו ופדות נפשנו, ובודאי נתקבלו ג"כ החלטות בהנוגע לפועל, להפצת המעינות חוצה ולתורה ומצות בפרט, והרי היום יום סגולה הוא, ובמילא ההתעוררות בעת רצון בקל יותר להמשיכה בהפועל, ובודאי ימלא בהזדמנות הבאה.

בהנוגע לשאלתו אודות קביעות מקום התועדות אם בבית הכנסת או בבית של אחד מאנ"ש, הרי מזה ומזה אל תנח ידך, כי שניהם נחוצים עד מאד וכבר נשאלה שאלה זו אצל כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע וענה ע"ד הנ"ל, ובכלל צריך להתחשב בזה בתנאי המקום ובאופן שינצלו המעלות דהתועדות במקום הרבים, היינו בבית הכנסת או בבית המדרש וגם המעלות דהתועדות בבית פרטי שעי"ז מקרבים את הבית ג"כ, והאופן בזה העשי' לסרוגין, אבל אי אפשר לקבוע מסמרות וכמובן.
