Greetings and blessing,

I reply to your letter written at the conclusion of Shabbos* 24 Kislev*. I had written to you (see letter no. 3056) regarding the Esrogim* of Calabria, and you know what gives them their value. Indeed, it was there that they were sought in the era of the masters who authored the Tosafos*, as stated in the responsa of the Chasam Sofer*, cited by the Shaar HaKollel*. Obviously, there are also, besides this, reasons based on the hidden teaching of the Torah*.

One must therefore endeavor to take shoots and saplings from that region and, if possible, from the orchard in which the Esrogim* are picked each year. It would even be preferable that it not be an orchard — that is, a place cultivated by men — but rather a forest. One can surely find such a domain.

You mention the problem of Orlah* (the prohibition of fruits during the first three years of the tree). Rav N. Elbaum (Rav Nachman Elbaum) and especially his father-in-law, Rav D. Ludmir (Rav Zeev Dov Ludmir; see letters no. 3056 and 3061), have experience in this matter, as they say. You will therefore be able to verify with them how to take a cutting from the tree with the certainty that it will be sufficient.

At the Chassidic* farbrengen* of 19 Kislev*, one surely contributed to the completion of the Talmud* and especially took good decisions applicable concretely in daily life. It is a pity that such news is not disseminated through the Italian press, as your silence indicates. You might find, in your location, someone apt to do so (to write such articles), although the young Naeh (see, on this subject, letters no. 2380 and 3016) has departed.

במענה על מכתבו ממוצש"ק אור כ"ד כסלו. הנה מה שכתבתי אודות אתרוגי קלברה, הרי ידוע שההידור בזה הוא מה שעוד מימי בעלי התוספות לקחו אתרוגים משם, וכמובא בשו"ת חת"ס הועתק בשער הכולל (מובן שהטעמים ע"פ נסתר הוא ענין בפני עצמו), ולכן צריך להשתדל לקחת השתילים ויחורים מאותו המחוז, ומה טוב מאותה השדה משם לוקחים האתרוגים כל השנים, ומה טוב שיהי' לא מפרדס היינו חלקה הנמצאת בטפול בני אדם אלא ביער. ובודאי יש למצוא שטחים כאלו.

מ"ש אודות הענין דערלה. הנה להר"ן שי' עלבוים והעיקר לחותנו הר"ד לודמיר שי' ישנו נסיון (פראקטיק) בזה, כפי שאומרים. ובמילא יוכל להודע אצלם הפרטים באיזה אופן יש לקחת האילן עם הסלע ובאופן שיהי' בטוח שזהו מספיק.

בטח בהתועדות דיום הבהיר י"ט כסלו השתתפו ג"כ בחלוקת הש"ס, והעיקר בהחלטות טובות בהנוגע לפועל בחיי היום יומי, וחבל אשר כפי הנראה משתיקתו של כת"ר, הנה אין מדפיסים במכ"ע האיטלקי ענינים כמו אלה, אף שיש למצוא המוכשר לזה במקומו, גם אחרי נסיעת האברך נאה שי'.
