Greetings and blessing,

I am pleased that you spoke with this Chassid* who wished to meet you. Indeed, an effort is never in vain. Referring to the Jewish heart, our Sages say (quoting the words of the Jewish people): "I sleep in exile, but my heart is awake for the Holy One, blessed be He" — which also means, when the time comes, "for His Torah* and for His Mitzvos*."

You ask me about your relationship — which is, in fact, that of every Jew — with the service of Hashem of the heart (prayer). One must, certainly, accumulate knowledge of Chassidus*, but this is in no way an obstacle. For a person must always advance in a progressive manner. Everything that proceeds from holiness requires preparation and effort.

The preparation for the service of the heart is the precept: "Know the Elokim of your father." It is afterward that one can fulfill, as is proper, the continuation of this verse: "And serve Him with a whole heart." In general, one must defer, in this matter, to the spiritual guide, the dean of the Yeshivah* or the teacher, who possess experience.

You will therefore be able to consult with them without being subject to the corruption that results from self-love, which exaggerates sometimes the negative side of a person, sometimes his positive aspect. Now, our Torah* specifies that one cannot bear testimony concerning one's own self, to present oneself as a Tzaddik* or as a wicked person.

I appreciated the fact that you brought young people closer to the study of the Torah* and the practice of the Mitzvos*. You will try to bring them closer also to the inner teaching of the Torah*, to its soul (Chassidus*). And the Holy One, blessed be He, Who acts "measure for measure" (in the way one acts toward Him), but in a vastly increased manner, grants His help in the most abundant way to the one who makes this effort, so that he may study the Torah*, practice the Mitzvos* and serve Him with his heart.

You tell me that you are being offered a fixed position in the field of education (see, on this subject, letter no. 2213). I do not think that, for the moment, this is a good initiative. Devote yourself therefore to the study of the revealed dimension of the Torah* and to Chassidus*, with all your means. In this way, the directorship of the Yeshivah* and that of the network (Ohalei Yosef Yitzchak* Lubavitch in the Holy Land) will surely withdraw this proposal.

Obviously, this does not exclude the fact that, from time to time, you may devote a few days or a week to this activity, when the need arises, wherever it will be necessary, but you will not do so on a fixed basis.

May Hashem grant you success, so that you announce good news always and every day.

...נהניתי ממה שדבר עם הרה"ח... שישתדל להפגש אתם, וחזקה לתעמולה שאינה חוזרת ריקם, כי הרי לב ישראל - אמרו רז"ל אני ישנה בגלותא ולבי ער להקב"ה, (ובמילא במשך הזמן גם) לתורתו ומצותיו.

מה שכותב אודות השייכות (אליו, שכל אחד ואחד שייך) לעבודה שבלב, הנה מובן שאין כל סתירה לזה ממה שאומרים לו שצריך להרבות בידיעות בתורת החסידות וכו', כיון שבכל דבר יש על האדם להלוך מדרגא לדרגא, וכל דבר שבקדושה צריך הכנה ויגיעה. וההכנה לעבודה שבלב הוא כמ"ש דע את אלקי אביך (ואח"כ יכול להיות כדבעי) ועבדהו בלבב שלם. ובכלל בענינים כאלו, יש לסמוך על המשפיע והר"מ והר"י, כיון שלהם יש נסיון בדבר, ויכולים לדון על הענינים מבלי השוחד דאהבת עצמו, שלפעמים מגזמת בצד הלא טוב שבאדם ולפעמים מגזמת חלק הטוב שבאדם. וכפסק תורתנו שאין אדם מעיד על עצמו לשים עצמו צדיק וכן לשים עצמו רשע.

נהניתי ממה שכותב שקירב אברכים ללימוד התורה ולקיום מצותי'. ובטח ישתדל ג"כ לקרבם לפנימיות התורה נשמתא דאורייתא, ומדתו של הקב"ה מדה כנגד מדה, אלא שכמה פעמים ככה, להרבות בהסייעתא דשמיא בלימוד התורה וקיום המצות ובעבודה שבלב - של המשתדל בזה.

ובהנוגע לשאלתו שמציעים לו להתעסק בעבודת החינוך בקביעות, לע"ע לא נראה לי דבר זה. ובלבד שישקוד בלימוד תורת הנגלה ותורת החסידות ככל יכולתו. ואז בטח גם הנהלת הישיבה וגם הנהלת הרשת תפטור אותו מענין הנ"ל. ומובן שאין בזה סתירה שלעת מן העתים יעסוק איזה ימים או שבוע בכגון דא, בזמן ומקום של הכרח, אבל לא בקביעות. והשי"ת יצליחו לבשר טוב תכה"י.
