Rav B. E. G. (Rav Binyamin Eliyahu Gorodetski, director of the refugee assistance office in Paris; see, on this subject, letter no. 2826),

Greetings and blessing,

I do not know the exact date of the passing of my great-uncle, the Ramam (Rabbi Menachem Mendel), brother of the Rebbe Rashab*. I only know that it occurred in Bastia, the principal city of the island of Corsica, while France was occupied by the Nazis (it was later learned that he passed away in 5702/1942).

He rests in the cemetery of that city (in 5716/1956, his body was transferred to the Holy Land, to Tzfas*, at the request of the Rebbe) and his name, on the official documents, is Mendel Schneersohn. There are surely administrative services in Paris that, on the basis of this information, will be able to determine the exact place where he is buried.

בהנוגע לדודי זקני - אחי אדמו"ר מהורש"ב הרמ"מ ע"ה, הנה זמן מדויק דפטירתו אינני יודע אבל הי' זה בעיר באסטיא שהיא עיר הראשה דהאי קארסיקא, ובהזמן שהיו הנציס ימ"ש שולטים בצרפת, ומונח בבית העלמין דשם, ושמו הרשמי הי' מענדל שניאורסאהן, ובטח יש משרדים כגון זו בפאריז, שע"פ ידיעות הנ"ל יוכלו למצוא המקום המדויק.
