Greetings and blessing,

You have no doubt received my letter recently. In due time, I received yours, of 26 Kislev*, with its contents. I am surprised that you inform me of your move to a new house. For the moment, I have no information on this subject. I hope that at least by the time you receive this letter, everything will have been settled.

I reiterate my blessings to you, that by changing places you change your Mazal*, for the good and for blessing, and that this move bring you elevation, material and spiritual.

You speak of inaugurating the house (see the Sefer HaMinhagim* Chabad*, page 81). According to the books of the revealed dimension of the Torah*, one may question this subject. You will consult the later Sages on the Shulchan Aruch*, Orach Chaim*, chapter 568 and, at this reference, the Magen Avraham*, paragraph 5, and the Yad Ephraim. You will also see the responsa Chasam Sofer*, Yoreh Deah*, chapter 138, and the Toras Shelamim, chapter 19.

Nevertheless, Jewish custom retains the principle of such an inauguration and, moreover, a Chassidic* discourse of the Alter Rebbe*, currently being printed, composed from a manuscript of Rav Pinchas of Shklov (see Sefer HaMaamarim Alter Rebbe*, Hanahos HaRap, page 79, and Likkutei Torah* Berachah*, page 98d), says that "one organizes a feast and a joyful celebration when one inaugurates a house." One must therefore do so.

Consequently, you will organize a Chassidic* farbrengen*, during which words of Torah* and Chassidus* will be said. This will have a definite benefit, material and spiritual.

You are no doubt aware of our custom, which consists of affixing the Mezuzos* upon entering the house (see Sefer HaMinhagim* Chabad*, page 81), obviously without reciting a blessing (since thirty days must elapse before the installation in the new house is considered permanent). Then, after thirty days, one has one of them checked. One may also replace it with a finer one. And one affixes the new one with a blessing, with the intention that this blessing also apply to the Mezuzos* on the other doors.

May Hashem grant that you announce good news in all these areas. And He Who feeds everyone and provides for all needs will give you the means to cover the expenses of this new house.

You are considering traveling now and I am surprised at your conception of acquiring a house. You wish your work to be done by others (in your absence). Now, our Torah* states that the owner must put into practice the command: "You shall come to its aid" (assume the material responsibility himself).

In my opinion, you must remain on the spot until everything is completed, at a good and fruitful time. Obviously, this does not exclude the possibility of traveling for a few days.

בטח קבל מכתבי מכבר, ובעתו קבלתי מכתבו מכ"ו כסלו עם המוסגר בו, ולפלא שמזכיר שבשבוע הבע"ל יעתיק לדירה החדשה, ולע"ע אין כל ידיעה עד"ז. ותקותי שעכ"פ לעת קבלת מכתבי זה נסתדרו הענינים. ואכפול ברכותי שיהי' משנה מקום משנה מזל לטובה ולברכה. ושההעתקה תהי' מעילא לעילא בעלי' בגשמיות ובעלי' ברוחניות.

ומ"ש בענין חנוך הבית הנה אף שבספרי נגלה יש מקום עיון בזה, ועיין באחרונים שו"ע או"ח סי' תקס"ח. יעויין שם מג"א סק"ה וביד אפרים. ולהעיר ג"כ משו"ת חת"ס יו"ד סקל"ח ותורת השלמים סי"ט. הנה כיון שהוא מנהג ישראל, ועוד ועיקר אשר במאמר דא"ח מרבנו הזקן מבאר "הטעם שעושים משתה ושמחה בחנוכת הבית" (נמצא עתה בדפוס. והוא מביכל כת"י הר"פ משקלאוו) הרי יש לעשות כנ"ל. וכשיתועדו בהתועדות חסידותית ובהשמיע ד"ת דא"ח, הרי תהי' תועלת הן בגשמיות והן ברוחניות.

ובטח יודע ממנהגנו לקבוע המזוזות תיכף בהכנסו לבית, ומובן שבלי ברכה, אלא שבמלאת שלשים יום נוטלים מזוזה אחת לבודקה, והרי מותר להחליפה ביפה יותר ממנה, ובמילא קובעים החדשה בברכה, ומכוונים להוציא גם אלו שעל כל שאר הדלתות. והשי"ת יצליחם לבשר טוב בכל הנ"ל. והזן ומפרנס לכל ימציא גם הנצרך להוצאות הבית החדש...

מש"כ ע"ד נסיעה עתה... תמה אני על יחסו לענין קנין הבית, שרוצה בדוקא שתהי' מלאכתו נעשית ע"י אחרים! והרי הבעה"ב נצטוו על עזוב תעזוב עמו, וכפס"ד תורתנו. - ולדעתי, עליו להיות על אתר (מובן, שנסיעה על ימים אחדים אינה בכלל זה) עד שיגמר כל הענין בשטומו"צ.
