Greetings and blessing,

After a long silence, I have finally received your letter of the fast of the tenth month (that of 10 Teves*), which Hashem will transform into joy and gladness.

I learned that it is necessary, several times a year, to increase the number of students and introduce positive changes. I hope that at least in the future you will do so with the appropriate zeal. You know the image given by our Sages regarding Eretz Yisrael* — that of the deer whose skin stretches in order to contain its flesh (similarly, Eretz Yisrael* stretches and expands according to the number of Jews who reside there). The same is true here.

You mention the difficult conditions you endure. Compare, then, in your mind, those that exist in the Holy Land with those experienced by several hundred of our brethren in Russia, where they nevertheless formed a generation versed in the study of the Torah* and practicing the Mitzvos*, even though there was danger of death at every step. Can there be any common measure between the difficulties you currently face and those? It is unnecessary to say more about what is quite obvious.

This also provides the answer to your personal question regarding your housing. You do not see how the situation can improve. Now, it has already been explained that each person possesses a Mitzvah* that he must observe more scrupulously, for it is the portal (see, on this subject, letter no. 2990) through which everything one accomplishes regarding the Torah* and the Mitzvos* receives elevation, through which one also obtains the satisfaction of all one's needs and those of the members of one's family.

As far as you are concerned, this Mitzvah* is your work — intended to ensure an education based on sacred values in an institution of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, leader of Yisrael*, whose merit will protect us, who directs it, still carries out his mission there, and invokes Divine mercy so that those who work there receive blessing and success.

If you carry out this work by setting aside all calculations, you will know success in everything that concerns you in general and in the point you mention (housing) in particular, even if logically you see no possible way out. Indeed, Hashem acts "measure for measure" (in the way a person acts toward Him).

May Hashem grant you the merit and success of setting out on this path. You will immediately see the obstacles and difficulties disappear.

וכיון ששמעתי שפעמיים בשנה יש להגדיל מספר התלמידים ולעשות שינוים לטובה, אקוה שעכ"פ עתה התעסקו בזה במרץ המתאים, והרי ידוע ממרז"ל ממשל דצבי שעורו מתפשט כפי הדרוש לבשרו בהנוגע לארץ הקדושה, וה"ה גם בכגון דא.

ומ"ש אודות התנאים הקשים כו' וכו' הנה ישווה במוחו תנאי ארץ קדושה זו לכמו שהיו לכמה מאות מאחינו ברוסיא, שהעמידו דור של לומדי תורה ומקיימי מצות אף שהי' קשור זה בסכנת מות ממש על כל צעד ושעל, ומה ערך להקישוים עתה לגבי ההם, והאריכות בדבר הפשוט אין בה צורך.

וזהו ג"כ מענה לשאלתו שלו, בענין הפרטי של הדירה, שאינו רואה מוצא איך ישתפר המצב, כי כבר אמור שלכל אחד ואחד ישנה מצוה שבה צריך להיות זהיר טפי, כי היא השער לכל ענינים דתורה ומצות בדרך מל[מ]טלמ"ע, והשער להמשכת כל המצטרך לו ולב"ב בדרך מלמעלה למטה, שבנדון דידי' הוא ענין עבודתו בחינוך על טהרת הקדש במוסד כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע נשיא ישראל ומנהיגו העומד ומשמש בקדש ומעורר ר"ר לברכת והצלחת כל אלו העוסקים במוסדותיו, וכשהוא יעשה את שלו בעבודתו הנ"ל מבלי חשבונות תומשך לו הצלחה בעניניו בכלל וגם בענין הנ"ל אף שאין רואה לזה מקום ע"פ חשבון כי מדתו של הקב"ה מדה כנגד מדה, ויזכהו השי"ת ויצליח שיתחיל בתנועה זו תיכף ויהי' זה מבלי מניעות והעלמות.
