23 Teves* 5715,

Brooklyn,

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter, written at the conclusion of Shabbos*. It is unnecessary to remind you how greatly the great ones of Yisrael* condemned sadness and melancholy. The Tanya* explains this in chapter 26, as do several other texts. And practice proves that this state of mind resolves nothing — on the contrary. The same applies to what you are occupied with, particularly in this country, where joy goes straight to the heart, but not the opposite sentiment.

Moreover, your sadness is entirely without foundation. It is stated, indeed, that "Hashem* grants a wise wife." And our Sages* specify how to find her. One must search and search again, as if one wished to recover a lost object, with all the necessary energy. But, as is the virtuous Jewish custom, one must do so through intermediaries. You will therefore continue to act in this way, with the greatest trust in Hashem*.

Our Sages* teach in the Midrash* Bereishis Rabbah* (chapter 68, paragraph 4) that since the six days of Creation, Hashem* forms couples. He will therefore enable you to find the match* that suits you, both materially and spiritually. You have the merit of acting to bring the hearts of the Children of Yisrael* closer to our Father Who is in Heaven, by teaching them the inner dimension of Torah* and its distinctive customs. Now, the inner teaching of Torah* enables not only the betrothal, but also the marriage of Yisrael* and the Holy One, blessed be He. All of this will enable you to recover at the earliest what you have lost (just as Adam, the first man, "recovered his rib" by marrying Chavah*), to become engaged quickly in a manner fitting in every respect, and to build a Chassidic* home, an everlasting edifice, in joy.

Since you have raised this question, you will indeed delay your meals by ten or fifteen minutes on Mondays and Thursdays of the Shovavim Tat* period (the weeks of the Sidros* of Shemos*, Va'eira*, Bo*, Beshalach*, Yisro*, Mishpatim*, Terumah*, and Tetzaveh*), with the exception of the day of Rosh Chodesh*. During this time, you will study Chassidus*.

I have mentioned the names you communicated to me, of those who participate in the classes, at the resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us. A holy man and a Tzaddik* is always considered as living, and "one who comes before the man who is holy to Hashem* and makes himself known to him by name thereby receives merit and life," in the words of the Ramban*, commenting on the verse Bamidbar* 1:45.

With my blessing for success, at the earliest,

(1) Bereishis Rabbah*, chapter 68, paragraph 4.

(2) Just as Adam, the first man, "recovered his rib" by marrying Chavah*.

(3) The period of the Sidros* of Shemos*, Va'eira*, Bo*, Beshalach*, Yisro*, Mishpatim*, Terumah*, and Tetzaveh*.
