25 Teves* 5715,
Brooklyn,
Greetings and blessings,
I received with pleasure your letter of the 17th of Teves*, which followed a long silence.
Concerning your business, it is stated, as you know, that "Hashem* your Elokim* will bless you in all that you do." This verse must be interpreted in its most literal sense. One must therefore forge receptacles by following the ways of nature. Various texts of Chassidus* explain that one receives the heavenly blessing in this manner, in the material world. In most cases, it is necessary to act in a natural way.
Now, various reports that reach me concerning you indicate that you do not proceed in this manner at all (i.e., you do not act through natural means to ensure your material livelihood). Certainly, it is stated that all the treasures in the world would not suffice to provide a Jew with what is rightfully his, as attested by the fact that kingship for three generations was granted to the one who took three steps for Hashem* (Nevuchadnetzar*).
After all of this, and despite all of this, action remains necessary, as it is stated: "in all that you do." Explanations are given on this subject in the aforementioned texts. The natural garment (that must be forged) must not be more significant than necessary (one must not be absorbed by natural concerns), as it is stated: "He shall shave her head and cut her nails" (the foreign captive must not retain her physical allures). But conversely, it must not be too minimal either (a minimal action remains necessary).
How much more so for a man who must provide the material sustenance of the members of his family, which is a Mitzvah* of the Torah*. Obviously, my purpose is not to complain about the past, but to try to understand your situation and to indicate to you what is appropriate for the future.
With my blessing,
