26 Teves* 5715,

Brooklyn,

To my close relative, the Rav*, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem* and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav* Gershon (see note 1) and his wife, the Rebbetzin* Gissya,

Greetings and blessings,

I received with pleasure your letters of the 20th and 22nd of Teves*, which followed a long silence. I am surprised that you do not describe to me in detail the Chassidic* farbrengen* on the luminous day of 19 Kislev*, the festival of our liberation and the deliverance of our souls, and especially the good resolutions, applicable to concrete action, that were adopted on that occasion.

I have noted with satisfaction, from your letter, the public classes you give. I am surprised that there is not a single one among them that deals with the laws necessary for daily existence (see letter no. 3048). The ignorance in this domain is frightening, yet these notions are the most necessary, for the purpose of man is to do what Hashem* commands and to distance himself from what Hashem* forbids. And it is stated that "the words of the Sages* are more imperative" — or alternatively, "more pleasant" (one must therefore also know the Rabbinic enactments). You should consult, on this matter, the Laws of Torah Study of the Alter Rebbe*, chapter 2, paragraph 9.

May Hashem* cause you to confer merit upon those around you by instituting such study. Initially, these laws will be taught without specifying their source and without commentary. I allude, very simply, to the blessings*, the laws of prayer*, and what it is forbidden to carry on Shabbos*.

If I had the power, I would have established this study in all schools, from kindergarten to the Yeshivah* or the Kollel*. Indeed, it is painful to observe that the common feature of all these institutions is the neglect of this teaching. In this generation in particular, one no longer acquires this knowledge by observing conduct at home or in the street — on the contrary. You must understand what I mean.

As you request, I will mention both your names at a propitious time, at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us. Hashem* will grant you success so that you may give good news of all of this, as well as of your state of health, which also pertains to the domain of holiness. Indeed, the body is the property of the Holy One, blessed be He, and when the sons and daughters of Yisrael* are described as a "holy people," this includes their body as well.

With my blessing,

P.S.: The teaching of our Sages* that "when a Torah scholar studies Torah*, the Holy One, blessed be He, studies as well, opposite him" is found in the Tana D'vei Eliyahu* Rabbah, at the beginning of chapter 18, and in the Yalkut Shimoni* on Eichah*, paragraph 1034, in a somewhat different formulation.

No doubt you will utilize the day of the Hilulah* (of the Frierdiker Rebbe*), 10 Shevat*, which is approaching, in the manner desired by the one whose Hilulah* we commemorate.
