Igrot Kodesh · Letter 3244 — Faith & Bitachon

1 Shevat* 5715,
Brooklyn,
Greetings and blessings,
I have duly received your letter of the 17th (the Rebbe writes Tov*, "good," whose numerical value is 17) of Teves*. I was pleased to learn that, to a certain extent, you have resolved your housing problem and especially that you are now going to be able to set a date for your wedding, which will be celebrated at a good and fruitful time.
At all times, and particularly in our own, the Sages* are not satisfied when a long waiting period is planned before the wedding (see letter no. 2973), especially when the reason is the observation that the calculations regarding the means to ensure one's livelihood are not fully satisfactory. Indeed, our Sages* say, "no one knows how he will provide for his needs," and you should consult Iggeres HaKodesh* of the Alter Rebbe*, at the beginning of chapter 22, at the paragraph beginning "They have been compared."
You ask me how to receive the means to motivate oneself to make an effort. The beginning of this formula contradicts its end. Effort, by its nature, must come from man, and therefore cannot be received from Heaven. The path to achieve it has been charted for the majority, in the broadest manner. It is the path par excellence, that of the heart, according to Tractate Bava Basra 102.
Indeed, the Alter Rebbe* affirms that Teshuvah* is essentially in the heart. Various texts, particularly those of Chassidus*, explain this, among them Iggeres HaTeshuvah* of the Alter Rebbe*, the Derech Chaim* of the Mitteler Rebbe*, his son, and the Mitzvah* of Teshuvah* in the Derech Mitzvosecha* of the Tzemach Tzedek*, his grandson.
It is no doubt unnecessary to remind you of the day of the Hilulah* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, which will be on the tenth day of the eleventh month (10 Shevat*). Its significance, particularly when it concerns a leader of Yisrael*, is explained in Iggeres HaKodesh* of the Alter Rebbe*, chapter 27 and its commentary, as well as in the Siddur* (of the Alter Rebbe*, with Chassidic* commentaries) at the Gate of the Alter Rebbe*. No doubt you will utilize this propitious moment for all of this.
As you request, I will mention your name and the names of the people you cite at the holy resting place of the one whose Hilulah* we commemorate. May Hashem* cause you to know success, both material and spiritual.
With my blessing for being able to determine the Halachah* concretely applicable to daily existence, all the more so since many people are dependent upon your ruling (this young man is apparently the Rav* of a community),
