2 Shevat* 5715,

Brooklyn,

Greetings and blessings,

You write to me about the association of Chabad* women and girls. A detailed program for several months, encompassing both study and action, should finally be formulated. There is no lack of material in either domain. Several women must apply themselves to the task and work toward this with the appropriate ardor. All who have an influence on the women and girls must lend their support. Without doubt, the effort will be rewarded.

You tell me that you were reproached for calling 19 Kislev* the Rosh HaShanah* of Chassidus* (see letter no. 3250). You should consult, on this subject, the lengthy explanation in the introduction to Kuntres U'Ma'ayon* (of the Rebbe Rashab*), which also cites the words of the leaders of those who opposed Chassidus* in the previous generation. It is clear that those of the present generation are in no way their equal.

Likewise, you were reproached for calling the Alter Rebbe* "our first father." I do not understand why this poses a problem. Various texts of our Sages* show that a disciple calls his teacher "my father," and a verse (Melachim II, 13:14) states clearly: "My father, my father, chariot and horsemen of Yisrael*" — regarding someone who was not the biological father. The one who is the first in this chain of teaching can therefore indeed be called "our first father."

Moreover, in this case it concerns a leader of Yisrael*, who is therefore the father of several generations, as our Sages* explain at the end of Tractate Nedarim, in chapter 5 of the Yerushalmi*. If the one who poses this question is unfamiliar with the Yerushalmi*, he cannot question our holy masters either.

You mention your trip (apparently to visit the Rebbe). This is not timely, given that there is so much to do in the Holy Land* and only a tiny portion of the necessary work has been begun. Every passing day is a loss that will not be recovered, especially regarding the dissemination of the books of Chassidus* and, most particularly, of its practices and customs. In this latter domain, it appears that nothing at all has been done.

At least from the day of the Hilulah* onward, every Chassid* will surely have a particular motivation, which will be followed by its effect during the days, weeks, and months to come.

With my blessing,
