Brooklyn,
To the Rav*, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*, Rav* Chaim Moshe (see note 1),
Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter of the 22nd of Teves*. I was pleased with its content — what you tell me of the Chassidic* farbrengen*, and especially that it has ever more participants, including among those who, for the time being, still find themselves on the outside. No doubt you will redouble your ardor in this matter. Hashem* will grant you success.
You raise the subject of the time for the reading of the Shema Yisrael*. You indicate that the Alter Rebbe*, in his Siddur*, states that one must count the hours (whose duration varies according to the length of the day) from sunrise (and not from the beginning of the day, which is much later), but the Tzemach Tzedek* does not adopt this position.
I have received no definitive explanation on this subject. Nevertheless, the Tzemach Tzedek* merely raises a question on what the Alter Rebbe* says, in his commentary on the Mishnah*, Tractate Berachos*, chapter 1, Mishnah* 2. This is surely what you are alluding to. In any case, this does not change the Halachah*, which is clearly decided. Indeed, when the Tzemach Tzedek* expresses his opposition, he ordinarily does so in a much clearer manner. You should consult the Piskei Dinim*, the collected rulings at the end of the book, regarding the necessity of reciting the blessing of Shehecheyanu* on the morning of Purim* (which the Alter Rebbe* does not retain and which the Tzemach Tzedek* introduces). See also the notes at the conclusion of the Piskei Dinim*, published by Kehot*.
You speak of your students and say that some wish to intensify their study of the revealed dimension of Torah* at the expense of Chassidus*, while others express the opposite wish. It is impossible to establish principles in this matter, for everything depends on the nature and the reason for this desire. In any case, the situation must be rectified with benevolence. As you know, by pushing away, one obtains very little or perhaps nothing at all. This is not the case when the student is still within the four cubits (of the Yeshivah*) and one can still exert an influence upon him.
No doubt you will utilize the days of the Hilulah* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, in the fitting manner, for the great and for the small alike.
May Hashem* grant you success.
