To the eminent Rav*, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*, of manifold accomplishments, Rav* Shmuel Abba (see note 1),

Greetings and blessings,

I received with pleasure your letter of the 5th of Shevat*, which followed your silence. I also received the request for a blessing it contained, and I will read it at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us. I noted with pleasure what you tell me of the Chassidic* farbrengen* on the luminous day of 19 Kislev*, and especially the good resolutions, concretely applicable, that were adopted for the entire year and that you have already begun to put into practice.

You speak of the creation of schools in your city. In fact, one must first determine whether you are thereby going from right to left or from left to right. Indeed, if in the absence of this creation the children receive no Jewish education at all, everything that advances the situation is beneficial (literally: "a small redemption is still a redemption"). On the other hand, if the opposite is true and if not founding the school allows Torah* study to be intensified, it is quite clear that one should not weaken or diminish it.

You write that the study has been very satisfactory until now, and the development you fear stems from the fact that the authority has changed hands. It is therefore practically certain that when you become better acquainted with the representatives of the American occupation forces, you will be able to maintain the educational system without change. Moreover, their (the Americans') desire at present is to strengthen all religious activity, for they have verified that this is the only shield, the only rampart against the Reds, whom they fear.

If the Rabbanim* present their arguments firmly and emphasize — as can be concretely verified — that all the time devoted to religious studies will never be sufficient, that it is therefore unthinkable to abandon the program in effect until now, the authorities will be persuaded and will signify their agreement.

May Hashem* cause your words to emanate from the heart. Thus, they will be effective and will draw the hearts of the sons and daughters of Yisrael* closer to our Father Who is in Heaven, so that they may obtain good, both material and spiritual.

You will surely organize a Chassidic* farbrengen* on the day of the Hilulah*, 10 Shevat*, which approaches. I thank you for giving me good news in all these domains.

שלום וברכה!

לאחרי שתיקתו נעם לי לקבל מכתבו מה' שבט עם הפ"נ המוסגר בו שאקראהו על הציון הק' של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע. ונהניתי לקרות במכתבו אודות ההתועדות דיום הבהיר י"ט כסלו העבר והעיקר מהחלטות למעשה בפועל על כל השנה כולה שכבר התחילו להתקיים.

מ"ש אודות יסוד בתי ספר במחנם הט', הנה בענינים כמו אלו החילוק הוא אם זהו ענין שהולכים מימין לשמאל או משמאל לימין, היינו שאם בלי יסוד בית הספר לא היו הילדים מקבלים כל חינוך יהודי - שאז אפילו הצלה פורתא הצלה שמה, משא"כ אם המצב להיפך שבלי יסוד בית הספר מרבים בלימוד התורה, שאז הרי אין להחליש או למעט כמובן ופשוט, ולכאורה כיון שכותב במכתבו שעד עתה הי' מצב הלימוד באופן נעלה והשינוי שחוששים מפניו הוא מפני שעבר השלטון לידי אחרים, הרי קרוב לודאי שבהיכירות המתאימה עם ב"כ הכיבוש האמעריקאני אפשר יהי' להחזיק בהחינוך מבלי לשנותו, ובפרט שתנועתם עתה לחזק כל ענינים הדתיים ככל האפשרי כיון שנוכחו שזהו מגן ותריס היחידי כנגד האדומים שאימתם מוטלת עליהם. ואם יטעימו הרבנים את הענין בכל התוקף ובהסברה נראית גם לעין בשר שככל שירבו בלימודים דתיים עדיין אין זה מספיק, עאכו"כ שאי אפשר לוותר מהתכנית דעד עתה יתקבלו הדברים על לב השלטון. והשי"ת יצליח שיהיו דברים היוצאים מן הלב, ובמילא יפעלו פעולתם לקרב לבן של בני ובנות ישראל לאבינו שבשמים לטוב להם בגשמיות וברוחניות גם יחד.

בטח יתועדו ביום ההילולא יו"ד שבט הבע"ל, ות"ח על הבשו"ט בכל הנ"ל.
