I greet you and bless you,

I am surprised not to have received from you either letters or news for a very long time now. For the moment, the following is the subject of this letter. The great Rav, of manifold accomplishments, Rav Chananya Yom Tov Lippa Deutsch of Cleveland (see Letters #2992 and #3189) writes me, among other things, that he is in contact with you regarding the Mikveh* of your city.

I know it is unnecessary to specify its importance to someone like you. Even for a single woman (to enable her ritual immersion*), permission was given to sell a Sefer Torah* (to finance the construction of the Mikveh*), including in previous generations. How much more so must this be the case when it concerns multiple women, in this dark and troubled period.

Nevertheless, relying on the statement of our Sages that "one counsels eagerness to those who possess this quality by nature," I allow myself to also emphasize the importance of such an undertaking. And, "who knows if it is not for this that you have obtained the sovereignty?" (as Mordechai said to Esther, to persuade her to intervene to save the Jews) — in this case, a rabbinic position within a community. And it is said: "Who are the kings? They are the Sages."

You know the saying of the Baal Shem Tov* (see Letter #2985) that it is justified for a soul to descend "from a lofty peak to a deep pit" for seventy or eighty years, solely to render a service to someone, materially or spiritually. I would be pleased to learn that this project is progressing in the proper manner. The great Rav Deutsch is an expert in this matter. He will assist you to the extent of his ability.

You will no doubt also give me good news about yourself and the members of your family. You will also tell me what you are accomplishing in your community, particularly in our domain — that of Chabad*.

לפלא שזה זמן רב לא נתקבל ממנו מכתבים וידיעות, ועל של עתה באתי כי ימים אלו הגיעני מכתב מהרה"ג כו' רב פעלים מוהר"ח יו"ט ליפא שי' דייטש מקלעוולאנד וכותב לי בתוך הדברים אשר עומד הוא בקשר אתו ע"ד המקוה במחנם, ואף כי מובטחני שלמותר להדגיש לדכוותי' גודל ערך הענין אשר אפילו בשביל אשה אחת התירו ואפילו בדורות שלפני זה למכור ס"ת וכו' ועאכו"כ בשביל כמה נשים ובדורנו חשך כפול ומכופל זה, אבל נשען על מרז"ל אין מזרזין אלא למזורזין, הנני גם מצדי להדגיש גודל ערך הדבר ומי יודע אם לעת כזאת הגיע למלכות משרת רב בישראל מאן מלכי רבנן, וכידוע פתגם הבעש"ט אשר בשביל לעשות טובה לאחד מישראל בגשמיות או ברוחניות פעם אחת כדאית ירידת הנשמה למטה מאיגרא רמה למשך שבעים שמונים שנה, ואשמח אם יודיעני אשר מתקדם הדבר הנ"ל כדבעי, והרה"ג דייטש שי' מומחה בענינים כמו אלו, ובודאי יעזור לו כפי היכולת בהנ"ל.

בודאי יודיע מהנעשה אתו לטובה ועם ב"ב שיחיו, ומפעולתו בקהלתו בכרם שלנו ביחוד הוא כרם חב"ד.
