I greet you and bless you,

I respond to your letter of 5 Shevat, in which you complain about your moral state. You tell me that all the good resolutions you adopt do not last more than a few days.

There is a good remedy for this — a well-trodden path, traveled by the majority, and particularly wide, since it leads to a city of refuge* and consequently measures thirty-two cubits (approximately sixteen meters), as explained in the discourse of the Shabbos* that blesses the month of Elul*, which discusses these cities of refuge* (see Likkutei Sichos*, Volume 2, pages 380 and 623).

It is therefore important, above all, not to be harsh with oneself. Indeed, "we are workers of the day," in accordance with the saying (see Letter #3041) of the Tzemach Tzedek* that my father-in-law, the Rebbe, related to us. Our mission is to illuminate. Now, Hashem has placed you in a situation where you can exert a positive influence on one young man, then on a second. Divine Providence* has thus entrusted you with an enviable lot and tells you: "Here is the choice you shall make."

Without a doubt, the influence you exert will draw down Heavenly blessing also for your own service of Hashem. Thus, in a short time, your effort will be rewarded and crowned with success, including in an evident manner.

No doubt, on the day of your birthday (see Letter #2670), you adopted the practices of the Chassidim*, consisting of receiving an aliyah* to the Torah*, giving Tzedakah*, and delivering a Chassidic discourse*. I await your good tidings regarding all of this.

With my blessing for a year of success, material and spiritual,

במענה על מכתבו מה' שבט, בו מתאונן על מעמדו ומצבו ברוחניות, ושכל ההסכמות שעושה אינן מתקיימות אלא איזה ימים וכו'.

הנה העצה היעוצה לזה - דרך סלולה, דרך הרבים, ודרך רחבה עוד יותר - כיון שהיא דרך המובילה לעיר מקלט שהיא ל"ב אמה, וע"פ המבואר בשיחת ש"מ אלול בענין עיר מקלט - והעיקר ניט "גריבלען" זיך אין זיך, כי אנן פעלא דיממא אנן וכפתגם כ"ק אדמו"ר הצ"צ ששמענו מכ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר, אויף מאכען ליכטיג, וכיון שהשי"ת העמידו במצב כזה שיכול להשפיע על אברך אחד ואח"כ על אברך שני וכו' הרי העמידתו ההשגחה הפרטית העליונה על חלק היפה ואומרת לו בזה בחר. ובודאי תמשיך השפעה זו תוספת ברכת השי"ת גם בהנוגע לעבודתו בעצמו, עד שבמשך זמן יראה פרי טוב בעמלו ויגיעתו גם בגלוי.

בטח נהג ביום הולדתו כמנהג אנ"ש, בעלי' לתורה, בנתינה לצדקה, וחזרת דא"ח, ואחכה לבשו"ט בכל הנ"ל.
