Igrot Kodesh · Letter 3275 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 10 · Letter 312
B"H,
15 Shevat 5715,
Brooklyn,
I greet you and bless you,
I respond to your letter and to your greetings that were conveyed to me by your son. He will surely share with you the content of the conversation we had. Nevertheless, to accede to the request you formulated in writing and which he conveyed to me orally, I address to you these few lines, written briefly, as my time permits.
One of the domains that demonstrates the extent to which our generation lives in an intense and profound darkness is the following. Despite what is stated in various texts (see Letter #3302), particularly in Iggeres HaKodesh*, Chapter 22, page 134, of the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya* and Decisor of the hidden part of the Torah, author of the Shulchan Aruch* and Decisor of the revealed part of the Torah — no one can determine in what manner he will earn his livelihood. And this impossibility of knowing is even compared, in these texts, to the uncertainty regarding the date on which the sovereignty of Dovid will be restored.
Despite this, people begin at a relatively young age to seek a material career, which disturbs and undermines the calm necessary for a person's true happiness. And they act as if each person were capable of knowing the future — of affirming that by giving a particular form of education to one's children, by organizing one's affairs in a particular manner, one could ensure that the Holy One, blessed be He, will provide for one's needs when the time comes. Yet it is solely in this manner that Hashem sustains each person and satisfies his needs, with kindness and mercy.
You know the directive that our Sages derive from the verse, "And Hashem your Elokim will bless you in all that you do" (the blessing is revealed when a person fashions a vessel to contain it). This applies at all times. And one prepares for action just before the action itself. Moreover, this preparation must not compromise what is essential for each person.
Unfortunately, such is indeed the case with your son. For several years now, he has begun to concern himself, for whatever reason, with what his career will be, how he will earn his livelihood. This causes him deep worry and he is tense on account of this anxiety, of which he himself may not be fully conscious. He considers Shechitah* — which he has studied — as the activity upon which his entire future depends. And this unspoken idea is the origin of what he now complains about.
As I said, it is not certain that your son has fully understood that this is the case. But in my view, such is indeed the situation and such is its cause.
It is impossible, in the course of a discussion, to alter his conception — all the more so since it is deeply buried in his heart for several years, to the point that he himself does not measure how much it undermines bitachon* — trust in Hashem. Yet a straightforward reflection shows that this outlook also contravenes emunah* in Divine Providence*, which establishes that Hashem is Omnipotent. It is evident that if he were aware of this, his fear of Hashem would fight against such ideas.
I have noted the impossibility of immediately changing his conceptions and, for various reasons, I did not wish to explain all of this to him. I therefore asked of him the following points:
A) He must immediately prepare to earn his livelihood in another manner, so as to keep in mind that another means of sustaining oneself exists and that his livelihood does not depend solely on Shechitah*. It is good that he know the laws of Treifos* and Shechitah*, but he should nevertheless continue his studies at the Yeshivah*, in order to become a Rav*. He should prepare to receive Semichah* — rabbinic ordination.
B) If a weakness manifests once again in his hand, he should not struggle to overcome it immediately at that very moment. He should pay it no attention and take no notice of it. If he does not sharpen the knife at that moment or on that day, he will do so the next day or the day after.
C) To deliver him from doubt, constriction, and the pursuit of a career, and to bring him to expansiveness, it is indispensable that your son establish a fixed time to study Chassidus* — the soul of the Torah, the Tree of Life. This study must be daily.
I have good hope that if he puts all of this into practice, this manifestation will disappear of its own accord.
Regarding his visits to a doctor, I also gave him my opinion. He does not need them, as I said. Nevertheless, he has become accustomed to such visits and it is not in human nature to abruptly interrupt one's habit. He should therefore space out these visits, until they cease entirely.
May Hashem grant that you derive much Chassidic nachas* from all your children, for long days and good years.
With my blessing,
