Igrot Kodesh · Letter 3284 — Health
B"H,
18 Shevat 5715,
Brooklyn,
I greet you and bless you,
I learned, to my great surprise, how your daily schedule is organized. This schedule is unsatisfactory from the standpoint of preserving Hashem's property — namely, your body — as indicated in the Shulchan Aruch* of the Alter Rebbe*, Laws of Bodily and Spiritual Harm, paragraph 4; the Rambam*, Laws of the Murderer, Chapter 1, paragraph 4; and the commentary of the Radbaz* on Laws of the Sanhedrin, Chapter 18, paragraph 6.
Moreover, Chassidic discourses* and various talks explain that the health of the body is an integral part of the service of Hashem. One must therefore "assist it" (the body, rather than break it through mortifications). How much more so is this the case in this weak generation — including in the physical sense — as stated at the beginning of the third chapter of Iggeres HaTeshuvah*. One can observe in practice that physical weakness obstructs the service of Hashem — the fervor of prayer, the study of Torah*, and even the practice of Mitzvos*. In general, mortifications therefore cause more harm than good. It is unnecessary to say more, so self-evident is this.
I have good hope that upon receipt of this letter, you will cease starving yourself for several hours each day. You should take a beverage that strengthens the body and eat cakes in the morning — including before prayer.
You know the saying and teaching of our holy masters (see Letter #2670) that it is preferable to eat in order to pray rather than to pray in order to eat. This saying means, in the simplest sense, that if one is hungry during prayer, it is impossible for people such as ourselves to meditate properly and to do so for the required duration. If you eat before prayer, on the other hand, you will be freed from this disturbance. Consequently, you will be able to serve Hashem — if such is your desire — in a more positive and more effective manner.
To rectify the fact that your conduct, up to a certain point, has not been as just described, you should influence those around you so that those who are not in good health do not starve themselves, as stated in Iggeres HaTeshuvah*. In this way, they will pray in the morning and study Torah with a soul residing in a body that will not trouble them.
May Hashem grant you success.
With my blessing,
