Igrot Kodesh · Letter 3287 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 10 · Letter 324

B"H,

21 Shevat 5715,
Brooklyn,

I greet you and bless you,

A) I received with pleasure your letter, in which you discuss various issues. However, you make no allusion to what happened to you in 5687 (1927, the year of the imprisonment of the Frierdiker Rebbe in Soviet Russia). My father-in-law, the Rebbe, informed me of the qualities and abilities you demonstrated at that time. There is every reason to believe that if you reveal and utilize them once again, it will be for the benefit of the many.

The words of the Tzaddikim* are eternal and immutable, which also means that they act continuously. You must have witnessed their realization, at least in part, and I would be grateful if you could communicate the details to me. I thank you in advance.

In the country where we previously found ourselves (Russia), every person was asked to make an effort to strengthen the Yeshivos* and to spread them, in the spirit of Jewish Tradition, even if one had to risk one's life for it in the most physical sense. It is surely unnecessary to emphasize that this must be even more clearly the case when one is in a place and country where the only sacrifice expected is that demanded by Chassidus* — namely, the renunciation of one's own will.

At the Revelation of Sinai, the Torah and the Mitzvos* were given because the people declared: "We will do and (then) we will understand." And the same applies to the daily giving of the Torah and the Mitzvos*. Indeed, we bless Hashem "Who gives the Torah" — in the present tense — and it is therefore necessary to proclaim from the outset that "we will do and (then) we will understand." It is afterward that one can invest one's effort (intellectual, to understand the Torah) through one's faculties of intellectual discovery, reasoned analysis, and understanding — through one's intellect in general — as explained in several books and discourses of Chabad* Chassidus*.

Those who can exert their influence on the youth have a very special merit. For it is easier to change the personality of a young man or a young woman than that of a middle-aged person and, all the more so, that of an elderly person.

B) You mention the continuation of the publication of the periodical HaKriah VeHaKedushah. You surely know that at the end of the Second World War, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, requested that the publication of this periodical cease.

C) You speak of training counselors and teachers to teach Chassidus* in Hebrew. As you know, several teachers of Chassidus* in the Holy Land* give their classes in the Holy Tongue*.

You cite, in this connection, the verse "apples of gold in settings of silver." It is therefore surely unnecessary to point out that the relationship between content and language must be that which exists between gold and silver. The difference should even be less than that. You know, indeed, that the Rambam* (in the introduction to the Guide for the Perplexed, paragraph "The wise man said") cites this verse to illustrate the relationship between an image of the Torah and what it describes, but not between the content of the words and the language.

Consequently, I am somewhat surprised that you privilege the silver (the language of instruction) over the gold (its content) in your letter. You specify that certain institutions in the Holy Land* take into account the external appearance more than the profound content. It is clear that I did not suspect you of this. I justified your position by telling myself that the atmosphere of Eretz Yisrael* may have an impact in this regard. If this suspicion is without foundation, I shall be pleased.

No doubt you will use your influence with these institutions, to the fullest extent possible, to ensure that the youth of the Chabad* association receive the means to expand their activities, through the larger grant that will be allocated to them.

Naturally, you will be told that this goes against the principles and program of these institutions. Nevertheless, they will acknowledge that there is an even more fundamental principle — to ensure that the public listens to the words of the Torah and does not rebel against them, which Hashem should protect us from.

D) I read with pleasure, at the end of your letter, that you are going to send me a copy of the chapters and articles you have published, as well as your book that is currently being printed. No doubt you have already done so, and I thank you.

E) As you request, I have instructed my secretariat to send you the catalogue of our publications. You will indicate which books and articles interest you. These will be sent to you, without making a vow, if they are still available.

F) You surely took part in the Chassidic farbrengen* on the day of the Hilulah* (of the Frierdiker Rebbe, on 10 Shevat). I send you the Chassidic discourses* delivered on that occasion, which have been published with some addenda.

With my respects and my blessing,
