To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,
known as Doctor Ulman,

I greet you and bless you,

I have duly received your letter of February 10, and I am pleased to learn that Doctor Zuber is ready to assist you.

I am surprised that you do not mention in your letter the positive actions you are undertaking in your city to strengthen Jewish observance and to spread it. The Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya* and Decisor of the hidden part of the Torah, author of the Shulchan Aruch* and Decisor of the revealed part of the Torah, explains at the end of Chapter 25 of the holy Tanya* that every action performed in this way is eternal Above and is subject to the dimension of time only here below. You should consult this text.

From this one can conclude the merit and responsibility invested in each of these actions, including the one that appears, in our eyes, to be the most humble and modest. An illustration of this idea can be found in your own field — that of cancer research. At the beginning (of the disease), a single cell develops abnormally. And if this development is not stopped, it brings destruction to the entire group to which it belongs.

Now, if this is so for what is negative, how much more so is it the case in the domain of good. When a person decides to act upon a single cell and to develop it "abnormally" in a positive sense, he confers success upon the entire group to which this cell belongs.

All of this is the subject of your research, and it is therefore unnecessary to say more.

לפלא שאינו מזכיר במכתבו ע"ד פעולותיו הטובות בהחזקת היהדות והפצתה במקומו עתה, והרי כל פעולה טובה בכגון דא עלי' אומר רבנו הזקן בעל התניא - פוסק בנסתר דתורה - והשולחן ערוך - פוסק בנגלה דתורה - בספרו תניא קדישא סוף פרק כ"ה, אשר למעלה הוא נצחי לעולם ועד ורק למטה הוא תחת הזמן (עיין שם). שמזה מובן גודל הזכות וגם האחריות בכל פעולה ופעולה אף הנראית לעיני בשר פעוטה וקטנטנה, וגם לזה יש למצוא דוגמא מהענין בו עוסק מחקר מחלת הסרטן ר"ל, אשר ההתחלה היא שתא אחד (cell) מתחיל בגידול באופן בלתי נורמלי ואם אין מעכבים גידול זה, מביא הוא הירוס וחורבן על כל הקבוץ שהוא חלק ממנו, ואם במדת פורעניות כך הרי מרובה מדה טובה, שכאשר יעלה בלב אדם לפעול על "תא אחד" שיצמח ויגדל באופן על-טבעי אבל לצד הטוב, טמונה בזה הצלחת כל הקבוץ אשר תא זה הוא חלק ממנו, והביאור לדכוותי' - הוא העוסק במחקר זה - בודאי אך למותר.
