Igrot Kodesh · Letter 3293 — Teshuvah
Volume 10 · Letter 330 · To: grand Rav
B"H,
21 Shevat 5715,
Brooklyn,
To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,
Rav Yaakov Yitzchak (Rav Y. Y. Zalts; see Letter #2998),
I greet you and bless you,
I have duly received your two letters from the week of Parshas* Bo. My time at present does not allow me to develop a Torah commentary.
A) You ask me whether the women have the custom, among us, not to go to the bathhouse during the days of purity (preceding the ritual immersion), as stated in the Beis Chadash, Tur Yoreh De'ah, Chapter 188. I have never heard that such a practice is adopted. You will find the various opinions expressed on this subject in the Darkei Teshuvah, Chapter 188, paragraph 9. You should also consult the Responsa Maharsham, Volume 2, Chapter 40, and the Responsa Maharach Engel, Volume 6, Chapter 97.
B) The author of the Responsa Pekudas Elazar, which I mentioned in my letter (Letter #3192), is the great Rav Elazar Lev. This work was published in Satmar in 5691 (1931). The issue of electricity is discussed there, particularly with regard to Chanukah*. You should also consult the Mishpetei Uziel, Volume 1; the Kaf HaChaim, Chapter 673; the Yaskil Avdi, Volume 2, Orach Chaim, Chapter 9; the HaMe'asef, ninth year, Volume 8, Chapter 91; and the Shoshanah, published in Djerba in 5715, Volume 10.
With my blessing,
For the Rebbe Shlita,
the secretary,
When one recites the Psalms of Hallel* during the reading of Tehillim* (on the 24th of each month, according to the monthly division), one does so without a blessing, while seated, and one does not repeat any of the verses. One is then considered as if one is studying them. Due to these modifications, it is established that one is not reciting Hallel*, not pronouncing the praise of Hashem — one is merely reading verses.
This is the reason why some people read all the Tehillim* every day, even though "one who reads the Hallel* daily (is reprehensible, for he trivializes the praise of Hashem)." You should consult, on this subject, the Magen Avraham, at the beginning of Chapter 584; the Shnei Luchos HaBris, Tractate Tamid, page 257; and the Tzemach Tzedek* on Tehillim* 40:7, paragraph 10.
Do canned foods lose their flavor, and should one therefore recite the blessing of She'hakol* when consuming them, or not? Everything depends on the taste of each individual, and this has nothing to do with the fact that what is canned is considered as having been cooked. One must take into account the reason for this principle.
I do not understand what is gained when an old, empty pot is placed on the fire. On the contrary, this has the effect of damaging it, especially if it is made of steel. This can be observed in practice, and a verse of admonition (Yechezkel 24:11) confirms it: "She placed it empty on the coals, so that... (it breaks)."
You cite, on this subject, the Shulchan Aruch*, Chapter 318, end of paragraph 12, but this text deals with a pot full of water. Now, if permission was granted (in the laws of Shabbos*) in that case, how much more so must this be the case when it is empty and there is a risk of damage. There is no reason to fear, in such a situation, that one will begin to forge it.
This is the reason why all the Decisors clearly state, in Chapter 253, paragraph 3: "an old, empty pot," without distinguishing between clay and steel. It is true that at the end of Chapter 502, clay is mentioned, but in reality, steel poses less of a problem, and one can find a means to permit this pot even when it is new. You should consult this text.
It is forbidden to heal an idolater, based on the verse "you shall not show them grace," according to Tractate Avodah Zarah* 20a — and not because it is necessary to harm him. In fact, one does not seek to harm all idolaters, as stated in the Shulchan Aruch* Yoreh De'ah, at the beginning of Chapter 158. Consequently, there is no reason to make a distinction between a case where there is danger and a case where there is not. This is self-evident.
