Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter from the conclusion of Shabbos*, in which you ask me how to celebrate the Bar Mitzvah* of your son this coming Iyar* — discreetly or publicly — but you do not write me the reason why it should be done one way or the other.

In general, when a Jew reaches the age of observing the Mitzvos*, nothing justifies that the celebration be discreet. This was so previously, and how much more must this be the case in this deprived generation, in which it is necessary to strengthen everything pertaining to Torah* and Mitzvos, to impress their observance upon the minds of all who have the opportunity and means.

Obviously, I am not saying that you should squander your money. Nevertheless, there should be a celebration of Torah and Chassidus*, and those present should wish your son to grow in the fear of Hashem, to be a Chassid* and a Torah scholar.

You know the saying of our holy masters, found in the anthology on Tehillim*: "What a Chassidic gathering* can accomplish, the angel Michoel* cannot accomplish." Consult also the Zohar Chadash*, Bereishis, pages 10c and 15d, which discusses the joy of the Bar Mitzvah.

You ask me whether your son should come here in order to continue his studies at Yeshivas* Tomchei Temimim*. My opinion on this matter is well known. It would be best for him to join Yeshivas Tomchei Temimim of Lod.

When he decides when he will come here, the necessary form will be sent to him from here.

With my blessing of success, which will bring joy throughout the entire month and then throughout the entire year,

במענה על מכתבו ממוצש"ק, בו שואל איך לעשות את הבר מצוה של בנם... שי' בחדש אייר הבע"ל, אם בחשאי או בפומבי, אבל אינו כותב הטעמים באופן כזה או כזה.

ולכאורה כשנכנס איש היהודי בגיל מצות אינו מובן מפני מה לעשות זה בחשאי, אפילו בימים מקדם, ובפרט בדורנו עלוב זה, אשר כל ענין של תורה ומצות, יש לחזקו ולחקוק בזכרון כל אלו השייכים לזה, ככל היכולת והאפשריות. מובן שאין כוונתי בהנ"ל לבזבוז מעות אלא שתהי' מסיבה תורנית חסידותית והמשתתפים יאחלו לבנם שיגדל להיות ירא שמים חסיד ולמדן, וכבר ידוע פתגם רבוה"ק וואס א חסידישער פארבריינגען קען אויפטאן קען מלאך מיכאל ניט אויפטאן - נדפס בקונטרס קובץ תהלים -. וגם יעיין בזהר חדש בראשית (י, ג. טו, ד) בענין שמחת בר מצוה.

בהנוגע לשאלתו אם יסע בנם שי' לכאן, ללמוד בישיבת תומכי תמימים, הרי ידוע דעתי מאז בכגון דא, שטוב לסדרו בישיבת תומכי תמימים בלוד.

כשיחליט ע"ד תקופת נסיעתו לכאן בערך - ישלחו לו מכאן דרישה מתאמת.
